Chapter 1 - The Uninvited Ghost

“What’s in the envelope, Mason?”

Claire Whitmore’s voice broke the suffocating silence of the ballroom. She had walked halfway back up the rose-petal-strewn aisle, her heavy silk wedding gown rustling ominously against the polished marble floor. She didn't look angry yet; she looked profoundly, paralyzingly confused. She looked at me, taking in my snow-dampened coat, and then she looked down at the tiny, sleeping infant strapped to my chest.

“Mason, who is this?” Claire demanded, her voice rising in pitch as she turned to look at her groom.

Mason didn’t answer her. He couldn't. His vocal cords seemed to have completely paralyzed. He stood frozen beneath the lavish archway of imported cream roses, his face the color of wet ash. How exactly does a man explain to his wealthy, beautiful bride that the woman standing at the back of the room is the wife he claimed was entirely out of the picture? How does he explain the living, breathing baby he swore had never existed?

“My name is Rachel,” I said.

My voice was dead calm. It didn't shake. It didn't waver. It carried perfectly across the dead-silent ballroom, bouncing off the crystal chandeliers and the towering windows showcasing the snow-covered peaks outside.

“And this is Lily,” I continued, placing a protective hand over the back of my daughter’s warm, knitted cap. “She is Mason’s daughter. She is exactly six weeks and nine days old today.”

Claire stopped moving. The bridal bouquet of white orchids trembled in her hands. She looked back at Mason, her eyes wide with mounting horror. “Daughter?” she whispered.

The single word snapped the paralysis gripping my husband. The polished, charismatic mask that Mason wore so perfectly slammed back into place, driven by sheer, desperate survival instinct.

“Claire, sweetheart, do not listen to a word she is saying,” Mason stammered, stepping quickly down the aisle toward her, his hands raised in a placating gesture. “I told you about her. She’s unwell. She had an incredibly difficult birth, and she suffered a complete mental break. Postpartum psychosis. She’s unstable, she’s delusional, and she's been stalking me since the separation.”

My stomach physically turned. He had laid the groundwork. He had prepared his escape route weeks in advance, planting the seeds of my supposed insanity to ensure that if I ever did crawl out of the darkness, nobody would believe a word I said.
