Chapter 4 - The Undeniable Proof

I didn't argue with his frantic, pathetic lies. I let him scream. I let him dig his grave as deep as he possibly could in front of the people he desperately wanted to impress.
Then, I pulled the second document out of my stack of papers.
“This is a certified copy of the state police report,” I said softly, holding it up for the room to see.
I pulled out the third and final document, printed on heavy, official legal paper.
“And this,” I said, my voice echoing with absolute, lethal finality, “is the GPS telematics data pulled directly from the onboard computer of your SUV, Mason. Subpoenaed by the district attorney three days ago. It proves exactly where you stopped. It proves exactly how long your engine idled. And it proves exactly how fast you sped away, leaving us behind.”

Mason froze. The breath left his lungs in a sharp, audible wheeze. His arms dropped limply to his sides. The telematics data was the kill shot. It wasn't my word against his. It was irrefutable, digital, undeniable proof of an attempted murder.
“I walked for four miles in a blizzard, carrying my baby inside my coat, until a snowplow found us,” I whispered, staring dead into his terrified eyes. “You thought the cold would bury us. You didn't realize it would only make me unbreakable.”
