Chapter 3 - The Bleeding Empire

Over the next four weeks, my entire existence was devoted to two things: healing my body, and sitting beside my daughter’s glass incubator. I named her Maya. Every day, she grew stronger, her tiny hands wrapping around my finger with a fierce, undeniable will to live. She was a Thorne. She was a survivor.
While Maya was building her strength, I was systematically dismantling Daniel’s.
From my private suite, surrounded by my father’s team of forensic accountants and corporate litigators, I activated my audit rights. For six years, Daniel had convinced me that Morgan Logistics was his solitary triumph. He loved playing the self-made billionaire, attending galas, and rubbing elbows with Chicago’s elite.
What the public didn't know was that Daniel was merely the puppet. I held fifty-one percent of the voting shares through a blind trust established by my father.
As we dug into the financial servers, the rotting core of Daniel’s betrayal was laid bare. He hadn't just been sleeping with Vivian Ross; they had been aggressively embezzling millions of dollars from the company’s operational accounts. Vivian, acting as a "consultant," had set up a web of offshore shell companies in the Caymans. Daniel was siphoning employee pension funds and vital shipping revenue to purchase luxury penthouses, sports cars, and diamond jewelry for his mistress.
"They’ve stolen over fourteen million dollars in the last two years," Gerald reported one afternoon, sliding a thick ledger across my bed. "Vivian was getting ready to jump ship. The night you went into the hospital, Daniel wasn't just having a romantic rendezvous. He was transferring the last massive sum into her account to prepare for their new life in Los Angeles."
I stared at the staggering numbers, the cold, calculating silence wrapping around my heart. "He traded his daughter’s life for fourteen million dollars."
"Yes," my father said from the doorway, his eyes dark with vengeance. "What are your orders, Lucia?"
"Freeze it all," I commanded, my voice devoid of mercy. "Execute the forfeiture clauses on the union shipping contracts. Call in the debts from our silent partners. I want every single supply chain moving through Morgan Logistics stopped by midnight. Let him bleed out."
The retaliation was a masterclass in corporate warfare.
By Tuesday morning, Morgan Logistics was paralyzed. The union truck drivers, fiercely loyal to my father’s underground influence, staged a massive, coordinated walkout. The shipping containers sat rotting at the docks. The silent investors, tipped off by my father’s network, aggressively called in their massive, multi-million dollar loans all at once.

Daniel, locked inside his chaotic, screaming corporate headquarters, was drowning. His phone lines were exploding with furious clients. The banks were freezing his operational credit lines. When he desperately tried to access his offshore "safety net," he discovered that my legal team had already secured an emergency federal injunction, locking the Cayman accounts entirely.
He had walked out of my hospital room claiming he needed to protect his empire. Now, he was watching it violently evaporate into thin air, and he couldn't do a single thing to stop it.
