Chapter 2 - The Digital GuillotineEthan’s mouth opened and closed repeatedly, resembling a suffocating fish pulled from the depths. He looked frantically around the impeccably designed living room of our estate, as if expecting the walls to suddenly offer him an escape route. The arrogant tech-bro swagger that he usually weaponized against my friends and colleagues had completely evaporated, leaving behind a pathetic, trembling shell of a man.

“Maddie, sweetheart, you’re… you’re not thinking clearly,” Ethan finally stammered, stepping toward me with his palms raised in a placating gesture. “The pregnancy hormones, the lack of sleep—it’s making you paranoid. That push notification was for a corporate tax structured buyout. It was business. And my mother’s text? You’re misinterpreting it. The Scottsdale deed was an investment for our future. For Noah’s future.”

I didn’t blink. I didn’t raise my voice. I simply let out a low, humorless laugh that made Diane physically flinch.

“An investment for our future,” I repeated softly, adjusting the soft cashmere blanket around my sleeping newborn. “That is a fascinating narrative, Ethan. But you made one catastrophic miscalculation when you decided to play corporate espionage in my house. You assumed I was just a tired housewife waiting for you to come home. You forgot that I built the digital infrastructure for my father’s commercial real estate firm from the ground up.”

I reached over to the side table and tapped the screen of my tablet. It instantly cast to the massive eighty-five-inch television mounted on the stone fireplace.

The screen illuminated the room with lines of aggressive, scrolling code.

“You thought changing your passwords and using a VPN would hide your tracks,” I said, watching the blood completely drain from his face. “But while you were busy finalizing your little Scottsdale getaway, I was sitting at my primary workstation—the custom rig with 64GB of RAM you always complained took up too much space in the office. I wrote a highly aggressive Python automation script, executed via Selenium, designed to bypass your cheap proxy network and scrape the raw data from your offshore routing app.”

Diane looked at the television, her heavily botoxed face contorting in sheer terror as she realized she couldn't understand a single thing on the screen, but knew it spelled her absolute ruin.

“What did you do?” Ethan whispered, his voice cracking.

“I didn't just watch you steal from me, Ethan,” I smiled, a cold, predatory expression. “I intercepted the transfer. You thought you wired three million dollars to the Arizona escrow account. In reality, my script redirected that capital into an irrevocable, heavily fortified trust in Noah’s name. A trust that you have absolutely zero legal access to. You didn't buy a luxury desert estate, Ethan. You bought a digital ghost.”

“You… you can’t do that!” Diane screeched, her carefully crafted high-society facade shattering into a million pieces. “That money was promised to the sellers! We signed a binding Memorandum of Understanding! If the funds don't clear, they will sue us for breach of contract and seize my personal assets as collateral!”

I tilted my head, locking eyes with my monstrous mother-in-law. “I know, Diane. That was exactly the point.”
