Chapter 2 - The $600,000 Ghost

The VIP boardroom was heavily soundproofed, a stark contrast to the echoing ballroom outside. I sat at the head of the long mahogany table, wearing my wine-stained dress like a suit of armor. I refused the jacket Martin, our CFO, offered me. I wanted Daniel to stare at the physical evidence of his mistress's assault while he faced his execution.
Daniel was forced into a chair opposite me. Brooke had tried to follow him into the room, clinging to his arm, but the corporate litigator had physically blocked the door, informing her that as a mid-level employee, she had absolutely no executive clearance.
Evelyn Cross did not waste time with pleasantries. She opened her black briefcase and began dealing documents across the polished table like a dealer at a high-stakes poker game.
"Ashford Media Group," Evelyn began, her voice devoid of any emotion. "A vendor supposedly contracted for regional marketing and digital expansion. Over the past six months, Carter Vale Interiors has paid Ashford Media a total of six hundred and twelve thousand dollars across twenty-six separate invoices."
Daniel swallowed hard, his eyes darting toward Richard, the board chair. "We ran an aggressive marketing campaign. The board approved the expansion budget last fiscal year. I am the co-founder; I have discretionary authority."
"You have discretionary authority for legitimate vendors," Richard corrected him, his face a mask of absolute disgust.
Evelyn slid a piece of paper directly in front of Daniel. "Ashford Media Group is a ghost entity, Mr. Vale. It has no physical office. It has no digital portfolio. It has exactly one employee: Zachary Lawson. The older brother of Brooke Lawson."
Daniel flinched as if he had been physically struck.
"But that isn't the most interesting part," Evelyn continued, pulling out a thick stack of banking ledgers. "Zachary Lawson wasn't keeping the money. Within forty-eight hours of every invoice being paid, the funds were wired from Ashford Media into an offshore LLC registered in the Cayman Islands. An LLC titled 'Vanguard Holdings.' We expedited a subpoena this afternoon."
I leaned forward, folding my hands on the table, watching the man I had loved for two decades completely unravel. "Tell him whose name is on the Vanguard account, Evelyn."
"The primary beneficiary is Daniel Vale," Evelyn stated. "And the secondary signatory is Brooke Lawson. You weren't just having an affair, Daniel. You were using your mistress's brother to embezzle over half a million dollars from your own shareholders to fund a secret life."
Daniel leaped out of his chair, his chair crashing to the floor behind him. "This is a setup! Claire fabricated this! She's jealous! She's been acting unhinged for months!"

"Sit down, Daniel," Martin, our CFO, said quietly from the corner of the room. Martin reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, digital audio recorder. "I didn't fabricate the conversation we had in your office last Tuesday. The one where you asked me to forge a behavioral report against Claire, explicitly stating that if we could trigger the 'for cause' termination clause, you would cut me in for a ten percent equity bonus."
Daniel stopped breathing. He looked at Martin, the loyal CFO he thought he had bought, and realized he had walked blindly into a slaughterhouse.
