Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses

Ethan’s desperation quickly morphed into a cornered, vicious rage. The illusion of his control was shattering, and his bruised ego could not handle the humiliation. "You can't do this!" he roared, his face turning a dark, dangerous shade of purple. "I am a powerful man in this city! I have judges and politicians on my payroll! You think some shady lawyer can just walk in here and take my company?!"

Before Ethan could take another aggressive step toward Claire, the massive driver in the tailored suit, who had been waiting silently in the foyer, moved with terrifying, lightning-fast speed. He grabbed Ethan by the back of the neck and the belt of his expensive trousers, lifting the so-called billionaire off his feet like a misbehaving child.

"Mr. Kane insists on a zero-tolerance policy regarding raised voices around Mrs. Whitaker," the driver rumbled, his voice like grinding stones.

Vanessa screamed, grabbing her designer weekender bag and backing away in sheer terror. The glamorous, victorious entrance she had planned had devolved into an absolute nightmare. She looked at Ethan, who was currently dangling in the grip of a mob enforcer, and the reality of her terrible life choices finally set in.

"Put him down! We're leaving!" Vanessa shrieked, grabbing the rest of the heavy suitcases from the foyer. She didn't wait for Ethan. She dragged the bags out the front door, her survival instincts entirely overriding her supposed love for the married man.

The driver unceremoniously tossed Ethan out the front door, sending him sprawling onto the hard gravel of the driveway, right at Vanessa's feet.

"My team will be in touch regarding the asset seizures, Mr. Whitaker," Mara called out from the doorway, her smile razor-thin and devoid of mercy. "I suggest you use whatever loose change you have in your pockets to retain a very good criminal defense attorney."

The heavy oak doors slammed shut, echoing with the finality of a judge's gavel.

The next seventy-two hours were an absolute bloodbath for Whitaker Development. Dominic Kane was a man who paid his debts in full, and he unleashed his vast, terrifyingly efficient network to ensure Ethan had nowhere to hide.

Mara Voss filed the emergency injunctions before the courts even opened the next morning. Armed with irrefutable forensic evidence of embezzlement, forgery, and wire fraud, she secured a total freeze on all of Ethan’s personal and corporate assets.

When Ethan desperately tried to call his powerful friends, his politicians, and his bankers, he found that Dominic Kane’s invisible hand had already closed every door. The banks, realizing the collateral securing Ethan’s massive loans was fraudulent and legally contested, immediately called in his debts. His business partners, terrified of the impending federal indictments and the shadowy forces pulling the strings, severed all ties with him before lunch.

By the third day, the glittering empire Ethan had stolen was in complete, catastrophic ruins. He was locked out of his high-rise offices, his credit cards were declining at cheap motels, and the media had caught wind of the scandalous collapse of the city's golden boy.

Vanessa, realizing the money was gone and the federal authorities were circling, abandoned Ethan completely. She booked a one-way ticket to her mother's house in another state, leaving him entirely alone in the wreckage of his own arrogant creation.
