Chapter 9 - The Pen and the Sword

Claire invited Julian to her private penthouse overlooking the city the following night.
The sprawling living room was dimly lit, a fire roaring in the marble hearth. Julian walked through the front door looking like a conquering king. He took in the opulent surroundings, pouring himself a glass of Claire’s most expensive bourbon from the crystal decanter.
"I knew you were a reasonable woman, Claire," Julian smirked, walking over to the glass coffee table where the thick stack of surrender documents rested beside a gold fountain pen. "It’s a shame about Ethan. But you and I? We are going to rule this city together."
Claire sat in a plush armchair, her legs crossed, wearing a tailored white suit. She looked at him with an expression of profound, chilling calm.
"Before I sign over my father’s legacy, Julian," Claire said, her voice echoing softly in the massive room, "I want to hear you say it. I want to know exactly how you played him."
Julian laughed, entirely drunk on his own hubris. He unbuttoned his suit jacket and sat on the sofa opposite her. "Ethan was a greedy, insecure fool. I told him how to route the embezzled funds through the Cayman shell companies. I provided the offshore accounts. All he had to do was forge your signature on the mezzanine debt. Once he was completely trapped, I anonymously mailed the evidence to your lawyer, Mara. I knew you would destroy him for me. You did all the heavy lifting, darling."
"So you orchestrated federal wire fraud, international money laundering, and corporate extortion," Claire clarified, her voice deadly smooth.
"It’s only a crime if you get caught, Claire," Julian grinned, leaning forward and picking up the gold pen. "And I never get caught."

Julian pressed the pen to the signature line of the merger document.
"Actually, Julian," Claire whispered, reaching into her pocket and pulling out a small, sleek remote. "You just did."
