Chapter 10 - The Unbreakable Crown

Claire pressed the button on the remote. The massive flat-screen television mounted above the fireplace violently flickered to life.

It wasn't playing a movie. It was a live, high-definition closed-circuit feed of the penthouse living room. Every word Julian had just spoken, every arrogant confession of his international financial crimes, had been broadcast in real-time.

Julian’s arrogant smirk instantly shattered. The color completely drained from his face. "What is this?"

"This is a live feed directly to the United States Attorney’s Office, Julian," Claire said, standing up, her white suit gleaming in the firelight. "I didn't just invite you here to sign a contract. I invited you here to confess."

The heavy mahogany doors of the penthouse burst open with a deafening crash.

A tactical team of armed federal agents flooded the room, their weapons drawn, laser sights cutting through the dim light directly onto Julian’s chest.

"Julian Sterling!" the lead agent barked, moving with terrifying speed to slam the billionaire face-first onto the glass coffee table. The surrender documents scattered across the floor. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, international money laundering, and corporate extortion!"

"You bitch!" Julian roared, thrashing wildly as the heavy steel handcuffs clicked brutally around his wrists. His icy facade was completely destroyed, replaced by the rabid panic of a cornered animal. "I own your debt! I will bankrupt you from a cell!"

"You don't own anything," Claire corrected, walking slowly until she was looking down at his pathetic, blood-flushed face pressed against the glass. "When you confessed to structuring the mezzanine loan through an illegal, fraudulent enterprise, you rendered the debt completely null and void under federal RICO laws. You didn't bankrupt me, Julian. You just handed me back twenty-nine percent of my company for free."

Julian let out a blood-curdling scream of pure, desperate agony as the agents dragged him out of the penthouse.

When the doors finally clicked shut, the silence in the room was the most beautiful symphony Claire had ever heard. Mara walked out from the hallway, a fierce, radiant smile on her face.

"The SEC just froze all of Julian's shell companies," Mara announced, holding up her tablet. "It’s over, Claire. The board is completely cleared. You hold one hundred percent of Hartwell Holdings."

Claire walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out over the glittering, endless expanse of Memphis. She had been battered by betrayal, gaslit by a narcissist, and hunted by a corporate predator. But she had not burned. She had taken the fire and used it to forge a titanium spine.

As she looked down at the empire she had defended with her own two hands, Claire knew with absolute certainty that the darkness was permanently locked away. She had fought for her peace, she had protected her legacy, and her beautiful, victorious life was finally, eternally hers. The Queen had not just survived the game; she had rewritten the rules entirely.
