Chapter 6 - The Phantom's Price

The honeymoon phase of absolute power is always the shortest. For exactly one week, Claire Whitaker breathed the rare, unpolluted air of total victory. She completely restructured Hartwell Holdings, purging every remaining executive who had enabled Ethan’s toxic reign. The stock prices soared. The media hailed her as the ultimate comeback queen of corporate America.

But apex predators do not leave vacuums unfilled.

It began on a freezing Tuesday morning. Claire was standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows of her Memphis executive suite, sipping black coffee and watching the Mississippi River roll by. Mara Voss, her brilliant and utterly ruthless Chief Legal Counsel, walked into the office without knocking. Mara’s face was completely drained of color. She dropped a thick, red-flagged dossier directly onto the center of Claire’s mahogany desk, right next to where the anonymous white rose had sat a week prior.

"Someone is executing a hostile shadow-buy," Mara said, her voice tight with a panic she rarely displayed. "It started at the opening bell. A phantom proxy firm operating out of the Cayman Islands is aggressively acquiring our minority shares. They’re buying up everything Ethan’s former cronies panic-sold."

Claire’s blood ran cold. She set her coffee down, her mind instantly shifting into combat mode. "How much do they have?"

"Twenty-nine percent," Mara breathed. "And climbing. But that isn’t the worst part, Claire. I ran a deep forensic trace on the holding company executing the buys. The corporate seal registered to the shell corporation is a gold-embossed white rose."

Claire stared at the dossier. Debts are paid. Long live the Queen. It hadn't been a congratulatory note from a secret admirer. It was a receipt. Someone had orchestrated Ethan’s final downfall from the shadows, ensuring his swift imprisonment, only to clear the board so they could steal the empire for themselves.

The private line on Claire’s desk rang. The caller ID was restricted.

Claire answered it, placing it on speaker. "This is Claire Whitaker."

"Hartwell," a deep, velvet voice corrected smoothly over the line. "You dropped his name, remember? It suits you much better. I must say, Claire, you look stunning in emerald green. It really brings out the fire in your eyes."

Claire’s gaze shot to the massive glass windows of her office, scanning the surrounding skyscrapers. "Who is this?"

"My name is Julian Sterling," the voice purred, radiating centuries of untouchable old money and absolute arrogance. "I am the man who handed the FBI the final piece of evidence they needed to lock your husband away. I bought your freedom, Claire. And now, I am calling to collect my fee. I will be taking fifty-one percent of Hartwell Holdings by Friday."
