Chapter 5 - The Untouchable Mother

The trial didn't even last a full month.

Faced with the mountain of incontrovertible evidence I had smuggled out of their own home, combined with the audio recording of their hospital room ambush, the Vance family's high-priced defense attorneys advised them to surrender. Julian, arrogant to the very end, tried to throw his mother and his mistress under the bus to save himself. It didn't work.

Julian was sentenced to fifteen years in federal prison. Eleanor received twelve. Sienna, realizing her billionaire meal ticket was gone, attempted to flee the country but was apprehended at O'Hare International Airport. She was currently serving eight years for her role in the offshore laundering.

The government seized everything. The penthouse, the company, the luxury cars, and the offshore accounts were all liquidated to pay back the defrauded banks.

One year later, the crisp autumn air blew through the massive, sprawling backyard of my new home in a quiet, heavily wooded suburb. I sat on a plush outdoor sofa, sipping a cup of hot tea, watching Leo and Oliver crawl rapidly across a patchwork quilt spread over the grass. They were strong, healthy, and completely unaware of the toxic bloodline that had tried to claim them.

Because of my cooperation as a federal whistleblower, I had been awarded a substantial percentage of the recovered funds—a sum that dwarfed the pathetic $200,000 Julian had tossed onto my hospital bed.

I didn't just survive their betrayal; I had weaponized it to build an impenetrable fortress for my sons. Julian had thought I was a fragile, broken woman who could be bought and discarded. He didn't understand that when you threaten a mother's children, you aren't negotiating a contract. You are signing your own death warrant.
