Chapter 5 - The Rebirth

One year later.

The sunset over the Amalfi Coast was a brilliant explosion of gold and violet, reflecting perfectly off the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean. I sat on the terrace of my private villa, a glass of vintage Pinot Grigio in my hand, listening to the gentle crash of the waves below.

The divorce had been finalized six months ago. Because of his felony conviction for the bank fraud, the judge had thrown out Bradley’s demands for alimony completely. He was currently serving a three-year sentence in a minimum-security facility.

Barbara had quietly settled the defamation lawsuit out of court, effectively draining her retirement savings to avoid a public trial. She was forced to downsize to a small apartment, miles away from the wealthy social circles she had once weaponized against me.

My business had not only survived the public drama; it had thrived. The viral nature of the incident had accidentally skyrocketed my firm’s visibility, bringing in major female-led corporate clients who loved the fact that I refused to back down to a bully.

A pair of warm arms wrapped around my shoulders from behind, snapping me out of my thoughts.

“The chef just brought out the lobster,” Julian murmured, pressing a soft kiss to my temple. Julian was an architect I had met in Rome during a business retreat. He was brilliant, kind, and treated me with the kind of effortless, unwavering respect that I had spent years begging for in my past life.

“I’ll be right there,” I smiled, leaning back into his embrace.

I took one last look at the ocean. I remembered the freezing, suffocating feeling of the pool water closing over my head. I remembered the laughter. But mostly, I remembered the exact moment I decided to stop drowning.

I took a sip of my wine, set the glass down, and walked inside toward the warmth, the light, and the beautiful, uncompromised life I had built entirely on my own.
