Chapter 1 - The Resurrection

"What did you just say?" Daniel asked, his voice barely a whisper over the chaotic alarms still blaring from behind the delivery room doors.
Vanessa’s smile faltered, but only for a second. She quickly smoothed her features into a mask of feigned concern, reaching out to stroke his lapel. "Daniel, I just mean... this has been so hard on you. If she doesn't make it, it’s a tragedy, of course. But you wouldn't be trapped anymore. We wouldn't have to hide in hotel rooms. You could finally be free."
Daniel stared at the woman he thought he knew. For eight months, Vanessa had been his escape, his fantasy, his pristine alternate reality where he was a highly successful executive without a high-risk pregnant wife waiting at home. But in the cold, sterile light of the maternity ward, looking at the woman who had just laughed while the mother of his children was receiving chest compressions, the fantasy shattered into a million jagged pieces of absolute horror.
Before he could pull away from her touch, the relentless, piercing tone of the heart monitor inside the room suddenly hitched.
Beep.
A pause.
Beep. Beep.
The rhythm returned, erratic but undeniably there. Someone shouted, "We have a pulse! Let’s move, get her to the OR now!"
The heavy double doors crashed open. Dr. Elena Brooks walked out, pulling down her blood-spattered surgical mask. Her eyes were dark, fierce, and entirely devoid of warmth as they locked onto Daniel. Vanessa immediately stepped slightly behind him, playing the part of the supportive, grieving companion.
"Is she..." Daniel choked on the words, unable to finish the sentence.
"She is alive," Dr. Brooks said coldly, her voice cutting through the hallway like a scalpel. "We restarted her heart. She is currently being prepped for an emergency C-section to save your children."
Vanessa let out a small, dramatic sigh. "Oh, thank God. Daniel, honey, isn't that wonderful?" She looked at the doctor. "When can he go in to see her? He’s been so terribly worried."
Dr. Brooks did not look at Daniel. She stared directly at Vanessa. "He can't. And you are going to leave this hospital immediately."
Vanessa blinked, her perfectly manicured hand dropping from Daniel’s arm. "Excuse me? I am here supporting the father."
"You are here trespassing," Dr. Brooks stated, pulling a folded, notarized document from the pocket of her scrubs. "Ten minutes before Claire lost consciousness, when her blood pressure began to crash, she asked for this to be added to her permanent medical file. It’s a medical power of attorney, completely revoking Daniel Mercer's right to make any medical decisions on her behalf or the children's behalf. She transferred those rights to her sister."
The doctor unfolded the paper and held it up. "She also signed a hospital-approved ban restricting Daniel Mercer and a woman named Vanessa Hale from coming within five hundred feet of her room, the NICU, or her children. Claire knew exactly who you were, Daniel. She has known for months."
Daniel’s blood ran cold. "No. That's impossible."

"She survived," Dr. Brooks said, turning entirely to Vanessa, delivering the line that wiped the arrogant smirk off the mistress's face forever. "And I'm afraid you won't be moving into her house or collecting any widower's insurance, Miss Hale. Her final instruction before she went under was to have hospital security physically remove you both. They are standing right behind you."
Daniel spun around. Two massive security guards and an off-duty police officer were already stepping into the corridor. Vanessa’s face drained of all color, the reality of her shattered victory finally sinking in.
