Chapter 3 - The House of Cards

Three weeks later, I was finally cleared to leave the ICU and move into a private recovery suite. My beautiful twins, Leo and Maya, were growing stronger every day in the NICU. They were tiny, fragile miracles, and holding them against my chest gave me a fierce, untouchable strength.

Daniel had spent those three weeks spiraling into absolute panic. With the hospital ban strictly enforced by off-duty police officers I had hired, he couldn't get anywhere near us. His calls went straight to my lawyer’s voicemail.

But Daniel’s true nightmare began when the first of the month arrived.

He was at his office when his corporate credit card was declined for a catered "client" lunch with Vanessa. Furious, he called his bank, only to discover that his personal accounts were deeply overdrawn. I had frozen all joint assets during the initial divorce filing, a filing that had been served to him via a process server in the hospital parking lot on the night I almost died.

Without my CFO salary quietly padding his checking account, Daniel was completely exposed. He was drowning in fifty thousand dollars of credit card debt—debt entirely composed of jewelry, hotel rooms, and designer clothes for his mistress.

Vanessa, sitting across from him at the restaurant, was not pleased.

"What do you mean declined?" she asked, her voice losing its usual breathy sweetness. "Daniel, this is embarrassing. Everyone is looking at us."

"It's Claire," he hissed, frantically tapping at his banking app. "She froze everything. She took her money out of the joint accounts weeks ago. I don't understand how she did this without me knowing."

Vanessa’s expression hardened. "Well, you need to fix it. We have the down payment for the new condo due on Friday."

"Vanessa, I don't have the down payment," Daniel admitted, his voice cracking with desperation. "I can barely make the rent on my apartment right now. I need you to float us for a few weeks until this divorce settles."

Vanessa stared at him as if he had just asked her to eat garbage. She had targeted Daniel because he wore expensive suits, drove a luxury car, and lived in a gorgeous four-bedroom house. She didn't realize the house was entirely in my name, purchased before we were married, and that the car was a lease I paid for.

"Float us?" Vanessa scoffed, standing up from the table and grabbing her purse. "I am not your sugar mama, Daniel. You told me you were leaving a hysterical, dependent wife. You didn't tell me you were broke."

"Vanessa, please, I love you!" Daniel pleaded, reaching for her hand.

She pulled away, her eyes cold and calculating. "Call me when your divorce is finalized and you actually have some money. Until then, lose my number." She turned and walked out of the restaurant, leaving Daniel alone with a declined card and the devastating realization that he had traded a devoted family for a woman who only loved his wallet.
