Chapter 1 - The File at Luke’s Door

Forty-eight hours after Vanessa slapped me in the pediatric clinic, someone left a thick white envelope on Luke’s front porch.
No return address.
No signature.
Only my name printed in black letters across the front.
CLARA BENNETT.
I was upstairs with Maya when Luke found it.
She had finally fallen asleep after another restless night, her tiny body curled against mine beneath a soft blanket. Her fever had broken, but she still startled at every sudden sound.
Every time she whimpered, I remembered the clinic.
Vanessa’s hand striking my face.
Justin’s arm around her.
His voice telling me to apologize.
Luke knocked once on the guest-room door.
“Clara,” he said quietly. “Come downstairs when you can.”
Something in his voice made my stomach tighten.
I brought the baby monitor downstairs with me.
Nathan and Mark were already at the dining table. The envelope sat between them, untouched. Mark had photographed it from every angle before Luke opened it.
Inside were three things.
A flash drive.
A stack of bank records.
And a sealed letter.
Luke opened the letter first.
It contained one sentence.
JUSTIN BENNETT IS NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO KNOWS WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU.
My hands went cold.
Luke connected the flash drive to an old laptop that was not linked to his home network.
The first folder was titled:
FINANCIAL TRANSFERS.
At first, I thought it contained the same records I found in our joint account: Vanessa’s apartment lease, luxury jewelry, boutique hotel charges, and private medical appointments.
But these were different.
These records showed accounts Justin had hidden from me.
A company registered in Nevada.
A consulting firm with no employees.
An account under the name Barlow Strategic Holdings.
And transfers totaling more than $720,000.
The money had not gone directly to Vanessa.
It had gone to Cárdenas Family Holdings.
Vanessa’s father’s development company.
Luke stared at the numbers.
“Justin does not make enough money to move this much,” he said.
Mark looked through the pages.
“Then someone is paying him.”
Nathan opened the next folder.
It was labeled MEDICAL RECORDS.
My name appeared at the top of the first document.
Clara Bennett.
The report claimed I had been diagnosed with severe postpartum anxiety six months earlier.
I stared at it.
“That is not real.”
Nathan’s expression turned dark.
“It is fake.”
“How can you tell?”
“The provider identification number is invalid. The medication code is outdated. And the doctor listed on this report retired three years ago.”
He clicked through the other files.
Each document was worse.
A fabricated prescription history.
A false emergency-room admission.
A psychiatric note claiming I suffered from “paranoid delusions involving marital infidelity.”
A treatment recommendation stating that I might be emotionally unstable while caring for Maya.
My chest tightened until I could barely breathe.
“They were building a case against me.”
Luke looked at me.
“They were trying to make it appear that you were unfit.”
Justin had not only cheated on me.
He had not only funded Vanessa’s second life.

He had not only stood by while she hit me with Maya in my arms.
He had been preparing to take my daughter.
