Chapter 3 - Justin Comes Looking for Us

Justin arrived at Luke’s house that evening.

Mark saw him first through the security cameras.

“He’s alone,” Mark said.

Luke stood from the dining table.

“No, he is not.”

We all looked toward the screen.

Justin’s black SUV sat at the curb.

But another vehicle was parked half a block away.

Two men sat inside.

Watching.

Mark zoomed in on the camera feed.

“They are private security,” he said. “Not police. Not anyone I recognize.”

Justin walked toward the front door and rang the bell.

Once.

Twice.

Then he began knocking.

“Clara!” he called. “I know you are in there.”

Maya startled awake in my arms.

I held her closer.

Luke stood near the door but did not open it.

“You need to leave,” he said through the locked entrance.

Justin’s voice tightened.

“I want to see my wife and daughter.”

“You threatened Clara with custody after your mistress assaulted her,” Luke replied. “All communication goes through counsel now.”

“You are turning her against me.”

“No,” Luke said. “You did that yourself.”

Justin’s voice shifted.

The polished executive tone disappeared.

“Clara, please. I made mistakes. Vanessa made mistakes. But we can fix this.”

I stood at the edge of the hallway, out of his sight.

For one brief second, I wanted to believe him.

Not because I loved him.

Because I wanted the life I thought I had to be real.

But then I looked at Maya.

At the fake medical records.

At the messages calling me unstable.

At the plan to take my baby and replace me with a woman who slapped me in public.

I stepped toward the door.

Luke looked at me carefully.

“You do not have to.”

“I know.”

That was why I could.

I stood behind the locked door.

“Justin.”

His voice softened immediately.

“Clara. Thank God. Please open the door.”

“No.”

A pause.

“I deserve to explain.”

“You deserve to speak to my attorney.”

“Vanessa is pregnant.”

“I know.”

“She is emotional.”

“She struck me while I held our child.”

“She apologized.”

“No, she did not.”

He exhaled sharply.

“You are making this bigger than it needs to be.”

I almost laughed.

The same words.

The same cold manipulation.

As if my pain only became real when it inconvenienced him.

“I know about Barlow Strategic Holdings,” I said.

The silence outside the door changed.

“I know about the transfers to Vanessa’s father.”

Nothing.

“I know about the fake medical records.”

His breath caught.

“And I know about your custody strategy.”

When he finally spoke, his voice was different.

Lower.

Harder.

“You do not understand what you found.”

“I understand enough.”

“You cannot use stolen documents against me.”

“I do not need to. The clinic footage, witness statements, police report, and financial records are more than enough to begin.”

“Clara.”

“My attorney will contact you tomorrow.”

“Do not do this.”

I held Maya tighter.

“You should have thought of that before you told me to apologize to the woman who hit me.”

Justin stood outside for another minute.

Then he said something that made every nerve in my body go cold.

“You will regret making me your enemy.”

Mark immediately opened the front door camera microphone.

“Mr. Bennett,” he said, “you are being recorded. Leave the property now.”

Justin looked toward the camera.

Then he walked back to his SUV.

But before he got inside, he turned toward the house.

He did not look angry.

That would have been easier.

May you like

He looked calm.

Like a man whose plan had changed—but not ended.
