Chapter 19 - The Execution on Wall Street

You do not defeat a man like Nathaniel Sterling in the shadows. You drag him into the blinding, unforgiving light.

By Monday morning, Nathaniel believed he had won. He assumed our retreat to Blue Ridge was a sign of surrender. He called an emergency shareholder meeting at the Sterling Global headquarters in Manhattan, intent on executing his hostile takeover of both the firm and my foundation.

The boardroom was entirely encased in glass, suspended eighty stories above the city. The executive board sat around the massive mahogany table, tense and terrified.

At exactly 9:00 AM, the double doors swung open.

Nathaniel Thorne walked in, flanked by three high-priced corporate attorneys. He moved with the slow, arrogant swagger of a conqueror stepping into an occupied throne room. He took a seat at the far end of the table, tenting his fingers.

"Good morning, ladies and gentlemen," Nathaniel announced. "I apologize for my prolonged absence. But I am back to claim my seat at the head of this table."

The room was dead silent.

"I have the proxy documents," Nathaniel smiled, pulling a thick leather folder from his attorney’s hands and tossing it onto the glass. "I legally possess forty-nine percent of this company. I am calling for an immediate vote of no confidence to remove Alexander Sterling from all executive operations, and to liquidate the Danielle Price Fund."

"It seems you have us cornered, Nathaniel," a voice rang out.

The side doors of the boardroom opened. Alexander and I walked in. I wore a stark, uncompromising white suit. I carried a single, red briefcase. We looked like executioners.

Nathaniel’s smug smile faltered for a fraction of a second, but his arrogance quickly masked it. "Ah. The tragic couple arrives. Have you come to sign the surrender papers, Amelia?"

"No," I said smoothly, walking directly to the head of the table. I placed the red briefcase on the glass. "I came to deliver an audit."

I opened the briefcase and pulled out a sleek black tablet.

"Your charter is legally binding, Nathaniel," I projected my voice, sharp and lethal. "You do, in fact, own forty-nine percent of the initial seed capital."

"Excellent," Nathaniel sneered triumphantly. "Then I expect your immediate resignations."

"There is just one minor complication," I said, tapping the screen of my tablet. The massive digital projector behind me flared to life.

It did not display Sterling Global’s corporate charter. It displayed a labyrinth of international banking routing numbers, all funneling into a single, massive offshore account registered in the Cayman Islands.

"What is this?" Nathaniel hissed, standing up.

"This is a detailed forensic audit of the forty-nine percent you claim to own," I stated, my eyes locking onto his with terrifying intensity. "You see, Nathaniel, when you fled the country twenty years ago, you didn't just walk away. You continued to illegally manage shadow accounts tied to human trafficking syndicates in Europe. And you used Ethan Cole's dummy corporations to launder the money."

The board members gasped in collective horror.

"You were Ethan's silent partner," I revealed, the final, sickening truth hanging in the air. "You funded the very monster I escaped."

Nathaniel’s face turned the color of ash. "Turn that off. This is a complete fabrication! You hacked my servers!"

"It gets worse, Nathaniel," Alexander finally spoke, his voice a vibrating, inescapable rumble of doom. "You stepped onto American soil to claim your shares. In doing so, you legally bound yourself to the jurisdiction of the SEC. And since your shadow accounts are actively funding European cartels, the moment you exercised your proxy rights..."

I tapped the final key on my tablet.

"...you officially engaged Sterling Global in an act of international terror financing," I finished, a cold, devastating smile breaking across my face. "Which triggered an automatic, mandatory reporting protocol to the Department of Homeland Security."

Nathaniel stumbled backward. "You set me up. You baited me into claiming the shares!"

"I didn't bait you," I said softly. "I just let you walk into the light. And the light burns."

The heavy glass doors of the boardroom burst open.

A dozen heavily armed federal agents from the FBI and Homeland Security poured into the room, their weapons drawn, instantly securing the perimeter.

"Nathaniel Sterling," the lead agent boomed, stepping forward with handcuffs. "You are under arrest for international terrorism, racketeering, and money laundering. Put your hands on the table."

Nathaniel was completely paralyzed. The arrogant architect of the shadow markets was reduced to a pathetic, shivering old man in a matter of seconds. As the agents wrenched his arms behind his back, he stared at me with pure, unadulterated terror.

"You are a monster," he hissed as they dragged him away.

May you like

"No, Nathaniel," I replied, my voice echoing in the silent boardroom. "I am just a woman who refuses to be erased."
