Chapter 23 - The Ambush at the Gala

There is a distinct difference between legal warfare and a public execution. In a courtroom, a corrupt prosecutor controls the narrative. But in front of the press, the truth belongs to whoever holds the heaviest ammunition.
U.S. Attorney David Kensington was hosting his premier fundraising gala at the Plaza Hotel. It was a lavish, highly publicized event designed to launch his campaign for Governor of New York. The ballroom was packed with elite donors, political allies, and hundreds of journalists.
He had spent the entire day leaking rumors to the press about the impending indictment of the "Sterling-Cole Monopoly." He believed I was currently hiding in my penthouse, frantically calling defense attorneys.
He had vastly underestimated the woman he was dealing with.
At exactly 9:00 PM, Alexander and I arrived at the Plaza. I wore a backless, blood-red velvet gown that moved like liquid fire, paired with the platinum lavender brooch. I looked immaculate, unbothered, and utterly lethal. Alexander wore a bespoke black tuxedo, projecting an aura of terrifying, silent power that forced the crowds in the lobby to part like the Red Sea.
We didn't sneak in. We bypassed the guest list check-in, ignoring the frantic shouts of the event coordinators, and walked directly through the heavy mahogany doors of the grand ballroom.
The moment we crossed the threshold, the ambient chatter died. Flashbulbs erupted like a lightning storm.
David Kensington was standing on the main stage, mid-speech, basking in the applause of his donors. When he saw us walking down the center aisle, his smug smile completely vanished. The color drained from his face.
"Security!" Kensington barked into the microphone, his political composure shattering instantly. "Remove them! They are subjects of an active federal investigation!"
Four private security guards moved to intercept us.
"If you touch my wife," Alexander’s voice echoed through the silent ballroom, a low, vibrating rumble of absolute menace, "I will buy the firm that employs you and ensure you never work in this city again. Step aside."
The guards looked at the billionaire, looked at the absolute lack of hesitation in his eyes, and physically backed away.
I didn't stop until I reached the edge of the stage. I didn't yell. I didn't raise my voice. I simply held up a sleek, encrypted digital tablet.
"Good evening, David," I said smoothly, my voice carrying clearly to the front rows of journalists. "I apologize for crashing your campaign launch. But since you froze my foundation's accounts this morning based on fabricated evidence, I thought it was only fair to return the favor."
"This is obstruction of justice!" Kensington shouted, pointing a trembling finger at me. "You are going to prison, Amelia!"
"No, David," I corrected him, staring dead into his panicked eyes. "I am going to balance the books."
I tapped a single button on my tablet.
The massive digital screens behind the stage—screens meant to display his campaign logo—suddenly flickered. They shifted to display a highly detailed, forensic financial ledger.
"While you were busy planting your sister in my charity to forge emails," I announced to the room of horrified donors, "my team was auditing the offshore PACs funding your political campaign."
The crowd gasped.
"You claim to be a crusader against corruption," I continued, my voice sharp and lethal. "But this ledger proves that your campaign received forty million dollars in dark money from the exact same Eastern European syndicates you accused me of harboring. Syndicates previously managed by your disgraced uncle, Senator Harrison Vance."
"That is a lie!" Kensington roared, spit flying from his mouth. "She hacked my servers! This is illegal!"
"It is a voluntary disclosure of suspicious financial activity, submitted by a licensed forensic accountant," I replied coldly. "You used a fake whistleblower to freeze my charity, hoping to bankrupt me before I could uncover your money laundering. You didn't investigate me, David. You tried to assassinate me to cover your own tracks."
The heavy doors at the back of the ballroom burst open.
A dozen federal agents from the FBI’s Public Corruption Task Force marched down the aisle, their badges flashing in the dim light. They bypassed me completely and marched straight up the stairs onto the stage.
"David Kensington," the lead agent boomed, pulling a pair of handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for public corruption, extortion, and federal election fraud. Put your hands behind your back."
Kensington stumbled backward, entirely paralyzed. The arrogant, ambitious politician was reduced to a pathetic, shivering criminal in front of every major news outlet in the state.
"You ruined me!" he shrieked as the agents wrenched his arms behind his back.

"No, David," I said softly, offering a cold, devastating smile. "I just closed your account."
