Chapter 17 - The Trojan Horse

When a ghost returns from the grave, they never come through the front door. They slip through the cracks in the foundation you thought were sealed.

By 2:00 AM, the gala was a distant memory. Alexander’s Manhattan penthouse had been transformed into a militarized war room. My lead forensic accountants, along with Alexander’s most trusted crisis managers, occupied the massive glass dining table. Elara was fast asleep in the nursery, guarded by two former Navy SEALs.

Alexander paced the length of the room, a glass of bourbon in his hand, looking like a caged panther.

"Nathaniel operates through proxy servers and shell companies," Alexander explained, his voice tight and ragged. "He uses legitimate corporate infrastructure to launder money for trafficking syndicates in Eastern Europe. When my father found out, he threatened to blow the whistle to Interpol. Nathaniel fled, but he swore he would return to claim the Sterling empire."

"Why come back now?" I asked, crossing my arms. "Why wait twenty years?"

"Because of the Danielle Price Fund," Danielle herself spoke up, stepping into the room with Lucy right behind her. They had rushed over the moment I called. "Amelia, our European branches just initiated a massive audit of three major overseas conglomerates regarding workplace abuse and financial coercion."

"We are hurting his bottom line," I realized, the pieces snapping together. "Nathaniel relies on those corrupt conglomerates to launder his dark money. We aren't just a charity to him; we are a massive financial liability."

Suddenly, the smart-screen monitor on the wall flickered. The digital layout of the European market vanished, replaced by a live video feed.

The room went dead silent.

Sitting in a leather high-back chair, smoking a cigar in a dimly lit, opulent office, was a man in his late seventies. He had sharp, aristocratic features and eyes that were completely devoid of human empathy. Nathaniel Sterling.

"Alexander," Nathaniel’s voice crackled through the speakers, smooth and dripping with patronizing warmth. "You look well. Marriage suits you. Though I must say, your new security firewalls are delightfully easy to bypass."

"You son of a bitch," Alexander snarled, lunging toward the screen.

"Temper, temper," Nathaniel chuckled, taking a drag of his cigar. "I am calling to offer you a courtesy, my boy. You built a lovely little life with my seed money. But your wife’s foundation is becoming a severe liability to my international partners."

"The Danielle Price Fund is untouchable, Nathaniel," I spoke up, stepping into the camera’s view, placing myself directly beside my husband. "If you try to hack our servers, the federal government will track your IP address before you finish typing."

Nathaniel’s cold eyes shifted to me. He smiled, a terrifying, reptilian stretching of his lips.

"Ah, the famous Amelia. The iron queen," Nathaniel purred. "I have no intention of hacking your servers, my dear. I am a businessman. I prefer leverage."

He held up a thick, leather-bound folder to the camera.

"Twenty years ago, Alexander’s father signed a mutual liability clause," Nathaniel explained smoothly. "It states that any assets acquired by the Sterling family belong to the founding trust. Legally, I own forty-nine percent of Sterling Global. And by marital extension, I own forty-nine percent of the initial capital used to launch your precious charity."

The air was sucked violently out of the room.

"You have seventy-two hours," Nathaniel stated. "Shut down the European audits and transfer your controlling shares to my proxy. If you do not, I will exercise my shareholder rights, freeze your foundation, and hand the Department of Justice forged documents proving Alexander orchestrated the embezzlement that sent Ethan Cole to prison."

The screen went black.

Alexander stood frozen, the magnitude of the trap paralyzing him. Nathaniel had legally cornered us, using a decades-old contract as a guillotine.

"He has the original charter," Alexander whispered in horror. "If he goes to the SEC, he can seize half your foundation. He can ruin everything you built."

I stared at the black screen. I didn't cry. I didn't panic. I felt the familiar, brilliant fire of corporate warfare igniting in my veins.

"He thinks he is dealing with the boy he left behind twenty years ago," I said, my voice dropping to a freezing, absolute pitch. I turned to Alexander, my eyes blazing. "He forgot that you married an apex predator."

"What are we going to do?" Danielle asked, her voice shaking slightly.

May you like

"We are going to let him step into the light," I smiled dangerously. "And then, we are going to cut off his head."
