Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Slaughter

The corporate headquarters of Morgan Holdings occupied the top three floors of a gleaming glass skyscraper in downtown Chicago. At 8:45 AM on Tuesday, Daniel strolled through the polished marble lobby, exuding the confident, untouchable aura of a king returning to his throne. He was flanked by his mother, Evelyn, who had insisted on attending the "restructuring" meeting to witness the final, glorious cementing of her son's legacy.
They took the private executive elevator to the fiftieth floor. Daniel joked with his sycophantic junior partners in the hallway, completely oblivious to the deafening, unnatural silence that permeated the executive suite.
He pushed open the heavy oak doors of the main boardroom.
The smile instantly died on his face. The color drained from his skin so rapidly he looked as though he had been physically struck.
I was sitting in the massive, high-backed leather CEO’s chair at the head of the long mahogany table. I was wearing my crimson suit, my posture perfectly straight, my hands folded neatly over a thick, ominous black binder. Flanking me were not his junior partners, but the seven senior voting members of the board of directors—all of whom were looking at Daniel with expressions of absolute, unadulterated disgust.
Standing quietly in the corner of the room were two uniformed police officers and a detective in a plain gray suit.
“Catherine?” Daniel choked out, his voice cracking, his briefcase slipping from his fingers to hit the carpeted floor with a dull thud. “What... what are you doing in my chair? What is going on here?”
Evelyn peered around her son’s shoulder, her arrogant smirk faltering as she saw the police officers. “Daniel, what is the meaning of this? Have her removed! She has no business being here!”
“Actually, Evelyn, I have every business being here,” I said, my voice echoing with absolute, uncompromising authority. I didn't raise my tone; the sheer coldness of it commanded the entire room. “As the anonymous holding entity that controls seventy-two percent of the voting shares of this firm, I have called an emergency, unilateral vote of no confidence. You see, Daniel, I didn't just marry into comfort. I bought your entire life.”
Daniel stumbled backward, grabbing the back of a chair for support. “Seventy-two percent? That’s... that’s a lie. The trust is managed by an independent third party!”
“The trust is managed by Marcus Sterling, who answers exclusively to me,” I corrected him mercilessly, gesturing to Marcus, who was standing by the window. “I bailed this dying company out ten years ago to protect your fragile, pathetic ego. But yesterday, I authorized a forensic audit of the operational accounts.”
I opened the black binder. The sound echoed like a gunshot in the silent room.
“You embezzled four point two million dollars of corporate funds, Daniel,” I announced, projecting my voice so every board member could hear the final nail in his coffin. “You used it to purchase luxury real estate and fund private medical care for your pregnant mistress, Jessica Vance. You committed gross fiduciary fraud, wire fraud, and grand larceny.”
Evelyn gasped, clutching her pearls, her eyes darting frantically around the room. “Pregnant? Daniel, you told me—”
“I told you I handled it!” Daniel snapped at his mother, panic completely overriding his logic. He turned back to me, his chest heaving, sweat beading on his forehead. “Catherine, please! We can fix this! Don't do this in front of the board! I’ll pay it back! I’ll give you whatever you want!”
“You have absolutely nothing left to give me,” I replied smoothly. “I have already evicted your mistress from the penthouse. I have seized all of your personal and corporate assets. You are officially terminated as CEO, effective immediately.”
“You can’t just destroy me!” Daniel screamed, lunging forward, his face twisted in desperate rage.
The detective stepped forward, blocking his path, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. “Daniel Morgan, you are under arrest for felony embezzlement and corporate fraud. Turn around and place your hands behind your back.”
“No! No, wait!” Daniel sobbed, the arrogant, abusive patriarch completely reduced to a weeping, pathetic coward as the cold steel clicked around his wrists.
“Oh, and Daniel?” I added, standing up from my chair and walking slowly around the table until I was standing directly in front of him. I pulled my phone from my pocket and turned the screen toward him.
I hit play.

The high-definition video of him slapping me in the foyer played in a continuous loop. The crisp audio of the impact, Evelyn’s cruel laughter, and his cold dismissal filled the boardroom. The board members watched in horrified silence.
“I also filed charges for domestic battery,” I whispered, staring dead into his terrified, broken eyes. “I told you I wanted to remember that moment clearly. For court.”
