Chapter 3 - The Father Who Never Died

Nathan told me everything he knew.
Years earlier, before he became my husband, Celeste had been searching for Adrian Vale.
Not because she loved him.
Not because she wanted money.
Because Adrian had evidence.
He discovered hidden transactions inside Vale Holdings. Money was being transferred through shell companies and private accounts. Vivian was not acting alone—she had powerful partners outside the company.
Adrian tried to expose them.
Then the plane disappeared.
Nathan did not know whether my father survived by accident or by design.
But Celeste believed Adrian kept the original financial ledger.
And that ledger could destroy Vivian.
“If Vivian wants him gone,” I said, “why does Celeste want to find him?”
Nathan looked ashamed.
“Because Celeste thinks Vivian betrayed her too.”
I almost laughed.
The mistress who helped destroy my marriage now wanted revenge against the woman who hired her.
But revenge did not make her innocent.
“She forged my signature,” I said.
“I don’t know if she did.”
“You know more than you’re saying.”
Nathan closed his eyes.
“She had access to old paperwork. She asked me for samples of your handwriting.”
The room went silent.
“You gave them to her?”
“I thought it was for a birthday surprise.”
I stared at him.
He sounded ridiculous.
But people who want to avoid guilt often make themselves sound foolish instead of cruel.
“You were never foolish, Nathan,” I said. “You were willing.”
He reached for my hand.
I stepped back.
“Do not touch me.”
His face broke.
“I will help you.”
“You will testify.”
“Yes.”
“You will give Daniel every message, every account number, every document Vivian shared with you.”
“Yes.”
“You will end things with Celeste permanently.”
“Yes.”
“And then you will accept whatever happens to you.”
Nathan nodded slowly.
For the first time, he seemed to understand that helping me would not save him.
It would only be the first honest thing he had done.
That evening, Daniel arranged a forensic review of Nathan’s phone and company accounts.
The evidence came quickly.
Celeste had sent Nathan detailed instructions for moving shares into a shell company.
Vivian had approved the transfer structure through a private family-office email account.
And the notary who witnessed my forged signature had received a payment from a company connected to Celeste.
But the most important discovery came from an encrypted voice message.
Vivian’s voice.
Cold and calm.
“Emma cannot be allowed to take control Friday. If Adrian is alive, she will find him. And if she finds him, everything ends.”
That was enough.
Daniel immediately filed emergency injunctions preventing any share movement before Friday.
Federal investigators became involved after reviewing the shell-company transfers.
Vivian’s control over Vale Holdings was frozen.
Celeste disappeared before officers could locate her.
And at 2:16 a.m., I received an email from an address I did not recognize.
Subject line: Your father never stopped watching over you.
Inside was a single photograph.
A man standing outside a small coastal house.
Older.
Gray-haired.
Thin.
But unmistakable.
My father.
Below the photograph was one sentence.
If you want to find Adrian Vale, come alone before Friday.
May you like
And beneath that:
Do not tell Vivian.
