Chapter 4 - The Most Dangerous Person in the Story

The message came from Celeste.
Daniel told me not to go.
The investigators told me not to go.
Even Nathan, who had lost the right to advise me on anything, told me it was a trap.
But Friday was less than twenty-four hours away.
If my father was alive, I needed to see him.
Not for the company.
Not for the shares.
For the eight-year-old girl who had spent twenty-one years wondering why her father never came home.
I agreed to meet Celeste at an old ferry terminal outside the city.
Daniel arranged surveillance from a distance.
Federal agents waited nearby.
But I walked to the dock alone.
Celeste was standing beside the water in a gray coat, no champagne silk, no diamonds, no polished confidence.
She looked tired.
“You came,” she said.
“You have my father?”
“I know where he is.”
“Then tell me.”
Celeste looked at the water.
“Your mother knew he was alive.”
“I know.”
“She kept it from you to protect you.”
“From whom?”
Celeste turned toward me.
“Vivian.”
I stared at her.
“Why?”
“Because Vivian did not want control only of Vale Holdings. She wanted your family trust.”
“What does that mean?”
Celeste’s face hardened.
“Your mother’s trust was created before Vivian ever took power. It contains evidence, protected assets, and voting restrictions. When you turn twenty-nine, you become the only person who can access the full trust.”
“And Vivian wanted Nathan to take my shares before then.”
“Yes.”
“Why did you help her?”
Celeste looked away.
“Because Vivian promised me something.”
“What?”
“My daughter.”
The answer stopped me.
Celeste swallowed.
“Years ago, I became pregnant. The father was a man connected to Vivian’s business partners. When I tried to leave, my daughter was taken from me. Vivian told me she could help me find her if I did what she asked.”
My anger did not disappear.
But it shifted.
Celeste had done unforgivable things.
She forged my signature.
She helped manipulate Nathan.
She watched him hurt me.
But she had also been used.
“How does my father fit into this?” I asked.
Celeste looked at me.
“Adrian helped me once.”
“What?”
“He found out what happened to my daughter. He tried to help me escape Vivian’s control. That is why Vivian needed him gone.”
The pieces began to connect.
My father did not simply discover financial fraud.
He discovered an entire system built on coercion, trafficking influence, stolen assets, and people who disappeared when they knew too much.
“Where is he?” I asked.
Celeste handed me a small key.
“Cape May. The blue house near the lighthouse. He has been hiding under another name.”
“Why didn’t he come back?”
“Because Vivian told him she would destroy you.”
I closed my hand around the key.
Then Celeste said the words I never expected.
“The most dangerous person was never Nathan.”
I looked at her.
“It wasn’t Vivian either.”
“Who, then?”
May you like
Celeste’s eyes filled with fear.
“Your mother.”
