Chapter 1 - The Echo of a Murderer

The digital recorder slipped from Dr. Owen Hayes’s gloved hand and clicked onto the stainless-steel bedside table, but the horrific echo of Chloe’s voice continued to bounce off the sterile walls of the intensive care unit. “The doctor already received the money. If something goes wrong during surgery, it will look like a complication.”
Blake Stanford, the powerful, arrogant CEO who had driven a six-inch kitchen knife into his pregnant wife’s abdomen just three days earlier, completely collapsed. His knees hit the cold linoleum floor with a heavy, sickening thud. The white roses he had brought to buy my forgiveness lay crushed beneath his expensive Italian leather shoes. He stared at the small black device as if it were a venomous snake, his chest heaving as the catastrophic reality of his actions finally pierced his delusions. He had not been a righteous protector defending a fragile victim. He had been a manipulated, violent pawn used to assassinate his own unborn children.
"Natalie..." Blake choked out, tears of absolute, unadulterated terror streaming down his face as he crawled toward the edge of my hospital bed. "Natalie, I swear to God, I didn't know. I didn't know about the babies. I didn't know Chloe set this up! You have to believe me, please! It was a momentary lapse of sanity, she manipulated me!"
I looked down at the man I had shared a bed with for three years. I felt absolutely nothing. The love I once harbored for him had bled out on our kitchen floor, dying alongside the two tiny heartbeats that had just begun to flutter inside me.
"You didn't need to know about the babies to know that stabbing your wife was a crime, Blake," I whispered, my voice raw and hoarse from the intubation tubes that had kept me alive. "You looked me in the eye while I begged you to listen. And you chose her."
Before Blake could attempt to grab my hand, the heavy wooden door of the ICU swung open with a violent crash. Four uniformed police officers stormed into the room, their hands resting firmly on their holstered weapons. Dr. Owen Hayes, standing tall and fiercely protective at the foot of my bed, didn't even flinch. He had pressed the silent emergency panic button hidden under the nurse’s station the exact moment Blake had walked onto the floor.
"Blake Stanford," the lead detective barked, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for the attempted murder of Natalie Sterling, and the double homicide of your unborn children. Put your hands behind your head."
"No! Wait! You don't understand!" Blake shrieked, his polished billionaire persona entirely shattering into a pathetic, whimpering mess. As the officers roughly hauled him to his feet and slammed him against the wall to cuff him, he twisted his neck to look at me, his eyes wide with desperate panic. "Natalie, tell them! Tell them Chloe orchestrated this! I am a victim too!"
"Take him out of my sight," I said, turning my face toward the window.
As Blake’s screams faded down the hospital corridor, a heavy, terrifying silence settled over the room. Dr. Owen Hayes walked over to my side, his hazel eyes filled with a profound, quiet empathy. He gently checked my IV line, his touch professional but incredibly warm.
"You said Chloe wasn't the most dangerous person in this story," I murmured, looking up at the brilliant surgeon who had miraculously stitched my shattered body back together. "Who paid the other doctor, Owen? Chloe is a boutique manager. She doesn't have the millions required to buy off a chief of surgery to commit murder on an operating table."
Owen pulled up a chair and sat beside me. He looked deeply troubled. "When you were brought into the ER, Dr. Vance, the Chief of Surgery, tried to take over your case. He insisted on operating alone. I noticed he was administering a lethal dose of a blood thinner that would have caused you to bleed out internally within minutes. I physically pushed him away from the table, locked him out of the OR, and saved you myself."

I felt a chill run down my spine. "Who paid him?"
Owen pulled a folded bank statement from his white coat. "I hired a private investigator the night I saved you, Natalie. The offshore wire transfer to Dr. Vance didn't come from Chloe Mercer. It came from a blind trust controlled entirely by your mother-in-law. Victoria Stanford."
