Chapter 5 - A New Heartbeat

Two years later.

The warm afternoon sun poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows of my sprawling corner office on the fiftieth floor of the newly rebranded Sterling Enterprises building. I stood by the glass, looking out over the magnificent Phoenix skyline, wearing a tailored navy suit that hugged my curves perfectly.

I was no longer the quiet, agreeable wife waiting for a cheating husband to come home. I was the undisputed CEO of a multi-billion-dollar empire. After Victoria’s incarceration, I had completely restructured the company, clearing out the corruption, paying back the defrauded investors, and doubling our profit margins. The world no longer knew me as the victim of a brutal stabbing. They knew me as the most powerful, brilliant female executive in the state.

The heavy glass door to my office clicked open.

I turned around, and a genuine, radiant smile broke across my face. Dr. Owen Hayes walked into the room, no longer wearing his surgical scrubs, but dressed in a sharp, casual suit. He walked directly toward me, wrapping his strong arms around my waist, pulling me in for a deep, lingering kiss that still sent sparks flying down my spine.

"Hello, Mrs. Hayes," Owen murmured against my lips, his hazel eyes crinkling with profound, unshakeable love. We had been married for eight months, a beautiful, intimate ceremony on a beach in Hawaii, surrounded only by people who truly cared for us.

"Hello, Dr. Hayes," I whispered back, resting my head against his broad chest. "How were your rounds today?"

"Long," he chuckled, gently stroking my hair. "But I rushed through the paperwork because we have a very important appointment to get to, and I refuse to be late."

My heart fluttered with a sudden, overwhelming surge of joy. I walked over to my massive mahogany desk and picked up my designer handbag. "I am ready when you are."

Thirty minutes later, we were sitting in a private, dimly lit ultrasound room at the best maternity clinic in the city. I lay back on the examination table, my hand gripped tightly in Owen's. The technician squeezed the warm gel onto my stomach, moving the wand gently across my skin.

I held my breath, terrified that the ghosts of my past trauma would somehow steal this moment from me. But Owen leaned down, kissing my forehead, his unwavering presence a shield against the darkness.

"There it is," the technician smiled warmly, turning the screen toward us.

A tiny, perfect silhouette appeared in the black and white static. And then, filling the quiet room, came the rapid, rhythmic, magnificent sound of a strong, healthy heartbeat. Thump-thump, thump-thump, thump-thump.

Tears of pure, unadulterated happiness spilled down my cheeks. Owen let out a breath he had been holding, burying his face in my neck, his own tears mixing with mine.

Blake Stanford had tried to kill me to protect a mistress who manipulated him. Victoria Stanford had tried to assassinate me because she thought I was a weak, disposable peasant. They had destroyed my body and stolen my children, believing they could simply sweep my existence under the rug.

But as I lay there, listening to the beautiful heartbeat of my new baby, holding the hand of a husband who worshipped the ground I walked on, I knew the absolute truth. I hadn't just survived their brutality. I had risen from the ashes, seized their empire, and built a magnificent, bulletproof life on the ruins of their destruction.

They were rotting in concrete cells, forgotten by the world. And I was finally, truly, alive.
