Chapter 4 - The Dead Woman Walking

If my appearance had shocked the room, Tobias walking on his own two legs absolutely shattered it.

"Tobias?" Penelope gasped, her face turning a sickly shade of gray. "But... your legs! You’ve been paralyzed for fifteen years!"

"A necessary illusion to survive a family of murderers," Tobias replied coldly, walking directly to the head of the table. He slammed a massive, thousand-page dossier onto the polished mahogany.

"What is the meaning of this?!" the lead board member shouted, completely bewildered.

"The meaning, gentlemen," I addressed the board, "is that the man standing before you did not survive a tragic accident. He orchestrated a premeditated assassination attempt."

I turned my freezing gaze to my husband. "You jammed my seatbelt with a wire. You broke the window and swam to the shore, where your pregnant mistress was waiting under an umbrella to watch me die."

"She’s lying! She’s hysterical!" Garrett screamed, his panic entirely overriding his polished facade. He lunged toward the table, desperate to grab the microphone. "They suffered brain damage in the crash! Security, remove them!"

"The only people being removed today are you and your mistress," Tobias said softly. He signaled the federal agents.

An agent stepped forward, holding up a warrant. "Garrett Hayes, you are under arrest for the attempted murder of Rosalind and Tobias Vance, as well as federal corporate fraud."

"Attempted murder?" Garrett laughed hysterically, sweating profusely. "You have no proof! It was an accident! The car malfunctioned!"

I pulled a small, digital recorder from my pocket and pressed play.

The audio was crystal clear, captured by a hidden microphone Tobias had planted in Garrett's office a year ago.

“Once Rosalind is in the water, it’s over, Penny. The sterilizer is already in her system, so there’s no surprise heir to contest the will. We just have to make sure the wheelchair goes down with the car. Then the shipyard is ours.”

The silence in the boardroom was deafening. The board members looked at Garrett with absolute, unfiltered disgust.
