Chapter 3 - The Courthouse Ambush

The fluorescent lights of the family courthouse buzzed overhead. I sat at the petitioner’s table beside Lena, my hands neatly folded over my briefcase. I felt the baby kick again—stronger this time, like she was cheering me on.
The heavy wooden doors swung open, and Nathaniel marched in. He was wearing a dark suit, just as I had instructed, but he looked completely unhinged. His tie was slightly crooked, his eyes wild with sleep deprivation and rage. Trailing behind him was Harper, looking nervous in a beige trench coat, and his high-priced defense attorney, a man named Vance.
Nathaniel glared at me from across the aisle. "You are destroying this family, Emma," he hissed.
"Mr. Pierce, take your seat," Judge Abernathy commanded as she walked to the bench, her robes snapping around her ankles. She was an older woman with zero tolerance for courtroom theatrics.
Vance stood up immediately. "Your Honor, we are filing an emergency motion to lift the asset freeze. My client is the victim of a vindictive, hormonally unbalanced spouse who is using the legal system to punish him for a simple marital dispute. Mrs. Pierce has a documented history of emotional volatility, and we have witnesses—including Ms. Harper Vance, who is present today—who can attest to her erratic behavior."
Judge Abernathy peered over her reading glasses. "A simple marital dispute? Counsel, I reviewed the petitioner's filings at midnight last night. If even half of what is in this brief is true, your client shouldn't be asking for his credit cards back; he should be asking for a criminal defense attorney."
Nathaniel turned pale. He looked at Vance, panicked. "What did she file?" he whispered loudly.
Lena stood up, buttoning her jacket. "Your Honor, we have provided the court with indisputable forensic evidence that Nathaniel Pierce has embezzled upwards of four point two million dollars from my client's protected family trust over a period of twenty-four months."
Harper gasped loudly from the gallery, covering her mouth. Nathaniel spun around to look at her, his eyes wide.
"Furthermore," Lena continued, her voice ringing clear and deadly, "we have submitted emails, server logs, and correspondence proving that Mr. Pierce premeditated a plot to falsify psychiatric records against my client. He intended to commit her to a psychiatric hold post-birth in order to seize conservatorship of her estate. This was not a marital dispute. It was a calculated, criminal conspiracy to steal her wealth and her child."
"That's a lie!" Nathaniel shouted, slamming his fist on the table. "She's crazy! She's making this up because I bought a bracelet for a coworker! She's hysterical!"
"Mr. Pierce, one more outburst and you will spend the night in holding," the judge barked.
I didn't flinch. I just turned my head and looked directly into Nathaniel's eyes. The absolute panic setting in was beautiful. He realized the seventeen-page dossier he had built to destroy me had been intercepted, and I was now holding the gun he had loaded.
"Counsel," Judge Abernathy addressed Vance. "Has your client disclosed to you that the FBI has already been alerted to the wire fraud utilizing interstate banking lines?"
Vance froze. He looked down at Nathaniel, his jaw tight. "No, Your Honor. He did not."
Vance began packing his briefcase. Nathaniel grabbed his arm. "What are you doing? Defend me!"

"I am a family lawyer, Nathaniel," Vance whispered furiously, shaking off his grip. "You lied to me. You are facing federal prison. I'm recusing myself."
Nathaniel was entirely alone. He looked back at Harper for support, but what happened next would break him completely.
