Chapter 4 - The Ultimate Betrayal

The judge called a fifteen-minute recess for Nathaniel to secure new counsel. He stumbled out into the marble hallway, hyperventilating, loosening his tie. Harper chased after him, her heels echoing sharply in the corridor.
Lena and I walked out quietly behind them, staying just out of sight near the heavy oak double doors. We didn't have to strain to hear them.
"Nathaniel, what is she talking about?!" Harper shrieked, her carefully cultivated, quiet demeanor entirely gone. "Embezzlement? Federal wire fraud? You told me you were just moving assets to protect them from her during the divorce!"
"Keep your voice down!" he hissed, grabbing her arm. "She's bluffing. It's just a scare tactic. Emma is too stupid to figure out the shell companies."
"She froze everything!" Harper yelled, shoving him away. "You promised me her position! You promised me we were going to take the baby, put her away, and run the firm together! Now they're talking about the FBI, Nathaniel! My name is on those offshore accounts!"
Nathaniel’s face twisted into something ugly and cornered. The charming executive was dead; the rat had surfaced. "You listen to me," he snarled, pointing a finger in her face. "If I go down, you go down. Who do you think signed the authorization forms for the Cayman transfers? You did, Harper. You signed them as Director of Acquisitions. You’re the fall guy. So you better keep your mouth shut and testify that Emma is crazy, or you're going to prison for fraud."
Harper stumbled back, the color draining from her face. She looked at the diamond bracelet on her wrist—the $22,800 "anniversary present"—and suddenly realized it wasn't a gift. It was a chain. He had used her as a human shield.
I stepped out from behind the oak doors.
Harper and Nathaniel both snapped their heads toward me.
"Actually, Harper," I said, my voice eerily calm as I walked toward them. "He's wrong."
Nathaniel stepped in front of me, his chest heaving. "Don't you talk to her. This is between you and me."
I ignored him, keeping my eyes locked on the terrified mistress. "I had my forensic accountant look very closely at the Cayman transfers, Harper. Nathaniel didn't just put your name on the accounts. He took out two massive corporate loans using your social security number and forged signature as collateral. You owe the bank three million dollars. He was planning to take the money and flee before the baby was born. He wasn't going to take you with him. He was leaving you with the debt."
Harper’s knees literally gave out. She slumped against the marble wall, sliding down until she hit the floor, sobbing uncontrollably. "No... no, no, no. He said he loved me. He said we were a team."
Nathaniel looked at me, his eyes wide with a terrifying, hollow realization. He had thought of everything, except the possibility that I was smarter than him.
"You..." he stammered, backing away from me as if I were a ghost. "You knew everything. For how long?"
"Long enough," I said, stepping closer to him, my voice dropping to a whisper that only he could hear. "You thought pregnancy made me weak, Nathaniel. You thought my love for our child made me vulnerable. But you forgot one thing about mothers."
I placed a protective hand over my belly.
"We don't just create life. We know how to destroy anything that threatens it."
Down the hall, the elevator doors chimed open. Two men in dark suits stepped out, flashing badges clipped to their belts. They weren't bailiffs. They were federal agents.

"Nathaniel Pierce?" one of the agents asked, walking briskly toward him. "We have a warrant for your arrest on charges of wire fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy."
As they pulled Nathaniel’s hands behind his back and snapped the cold steel cuffs around his wrists, he didn't fight. He didn't yell. He just stared at me, completely broken, realizing that the stage he had built had become his own gallows.
