Chapter 1 - The Blizzard Alibi

The Chicago blizzard swallowed Elena the moment the heavy iron doors of the Vital estate clicked shut behind her. The cold was an absolute shock to her system, biting through her cashmere coat, but she did not shiver. The burning betrayal radiating in her chest kept her entirely warm. She walked purposefully down the long, winding driveway, ignoring the sleek black SUVs belonging to Luca’s security detail.

She had not walked blindly into the snow. Elena was the daughter of a shipping magnate, raised in a world where weakness was blood in the water. For weeks, she had sensed the subtle shifts in her household: the hushed phone calls, the sudden reshuffling of her medical appointments, the way Giana would look at Luca across the dinner table with a sickeningly triumphant gleam. Elena had already suspected an affair. What she hadn't anticipated was the emergency guardianship petition—the cold, calculated legal maneuver to declare her insane and steal her unborn son.

At the edge of the estate gates, a nondescript silver sedan sat idling in the shadows of the snowdrifts. The passenger door swung open. Elena climbed inside, brushing the snow from her dark hair.

Behind the wheel sat Marcus, her father’s most ruthless and fiercely loyal corporate attorney. He did not ask if she was okay. He simply looked at the sheer, terrifying calm in her eyes.

"They forged the medical proxy," Elena said, her voice like cracking ice. "And they drew up the transfer papers for the voting rights of the shipping empire."

Marcus gripped the steering wheel, his knuckles turning white. "If Luca files those papers when the courts open at eight o'clock tomorrow morning, he will have total control over you, your medical decisions, and your father's legacy."

"He won't file them," Elena replied, resting a protective hand over her swollen belly. "Because by eight o'clock tomorrow morning, there will be no legacy left for him to steal. Execute the Ghost Protocol, Marcus. Everything we prepared. Drain the clean assets, transfer the international shipping lanes into the blind trust, and leave Luca's name isolated entirely on the harbor shell companies."

Marcus offered a sharp, dangerous smile. "The FBI has been watching those harbor companies for a year. If we isolate his name, the feds will have enough probable cause to raid his offices before lunchtime."

"Do it," Elena commanded, staring out the window as the Vital estate vanished behind a wall of white snow. "He wanted to rule the underworld. Let him drown in it."
