Chapter 2 - The Paper Guillotine

Dawn broke over Lake Michigan with a harsh, blinding glare. Inside the Vital estate, the atmosphere was purely frantic. Luca had spent the entire night tearing through the city, dispatching his men to every hotel, private clinic, and airport, searching for his pregnant wife. Elena had vanished like a phantom.
Giana sat on the edge of Luca’s leather sofa, biting her perfectly manicured nails. "Luca, you have to file the papers now," she urged, her voice shrill with panic. "If Elena gets to a lawyer, she'll contest the transfer! You need the guardianship in place so you can force her to return the baby once it's born!"
Luca dragged a hand down his exhausted face. He looked at Giana, and for the first time, the thrill of their illicit affair was entirely gone, replaced by a suffocating dread. But his greed won out. He snatched the forged legal folder from the desk and instructed his driver to speed to the downtown courthouse.
At exactly 8:05 a.m., Luca slammed the emergency guardianship petition onto the desk of the family court clerk. He also submitted the corporate transfer documents to the commercial registry, legally binding himself as the sole owner of Vital-Rossi Shipping.
He thought he had won. He thought he had trapped her.
Ten minutes later, as Luca stepped out of the courthouse and onto the snowy pavement, four black tactical vans screeched to a halt, completely surrounding his vehicle. Heavily armed federal agents poured out, their weapons drawn.
"Luca Vital!" a senior FBI agent shouted, flashing a warrant. "You are under arrest for federal racketeering, wire fraud, and tax evasion!"
Luca froze, raising his hands. "You have no jurisdiction over my legitimate shipping company!" he spat, assuming his lawyers would have him out by noon.
The agent chuckled, a dry, pitying sound. "We aren't raiding Rossi Shipping, Mr. Vital. Rossi Shipping was legally dissolved and restructured into a foreign blind trust at three o'clock this morning. As of ten minutes ago, when you formally filed those corporate transfer documents, you claimed sole ownership of three dummy shell companies at the harbor. Companies that contain fifty million dollars in undocumented, laundered cash."

Luca’s blood ran completely cold. The realization hit him with the force of a freight train.
Elena hadn't just run away. She had left the forged documents on the desk on purpose. She had laid a trap, knowing his arrogance and greed would force him to sign his name to the very companies the FBI was hunting. She had handed him the loaded gun, and he had pulled the trigger himself.
