Chapter 12: The Viral Squeeze

Don Alberto did not just want Lucian’s money. He wanted his complete and utter humiliation.

By Wednesday afternoon, the financial attack morphed into a vicious, highly coordinated smear campaign. It wasn't aimed at Lucian’s real estate business. It was aimed directly at my sanctuary.

I was sitting in my living room, Nico playing on the rug with his wooden blocks, when the notification flashed on my tablet. A prominent, heavily funded gossip blog had just published an "exposé."

The Mafia’s Charity: Is Open Door a Money Laundering Front for the Moretti Crime Family?

The article featured a fabricated audio clip—created using deepfake technology—that sounded exactly like Lucian. In the clip, "Lucian" was allegedly threatening a city official to fast-track the zoning permits for my domestic abuse shelters. It was a lie. A brilliant, terrifying, digital lie.

Within two hours, the article went viral on Facebook and Twitter. The comments were brutal. Donors began calling, threatening to pull their pledges. The public narrative was shifting, painting me not as a savior for abused women, but as a mob wife using charity to clean dirty money.

Lucian arrived at my apartment just as the sun began to set. He looked exhausted, his tie loosened, the weight of the last forty-eight hours pressing heavily on his broad shoulders.

He looked at my tablet, reading the headline. His jaw clenched so hard I thought the bone would snap.

"I am going to kill him," Lucian whispered, the promise of violence absolutely genuine. "I am going to fly to Palermo and tear Alberto’s throat out."

"No, you aren't," I said, walking over and taking his hand. I laced my fingers through his, grounding him. "If you resort to violence, you prove the article right. You prove you are still the monster they think you are."

"They are coming after your life’s work, Serena!" Lucian fired back, his dark eyes blazing. "I can lose a building. I will not let them destroy your foundation."

"They aren't going to," I said, my voice steady, vibrating with an absolute, unwavering confidence that surprised even me.

I walked to the kitchen counter and picked up a stack of folders Sarah Vance had couriered over. I tossed them onto the coffee table.

"What is this?" Lucian asked.

"When Bianca testified, she gave the feds the routing numbers for her father's offshore accounts," I explained, tapping the folders. "Alberto thinks he’s hidden his money through European shell companies. But he made a mistake. To buy out your minority partners in New York, he had to wire the funds through a US-based bank. A bank that Open Door happens to use for our international donations."

Lucian stared at me, the realization slowly dawning on him.

"I spent the last five hours on the phone with the board of directors at Thorne Banking," I said, a cold smile touching my lips. "I showed them the exact IP traces proving that the money used to buy your debt is tied directly to a sanctioned criminal enterprise. By tomorrow morning, the US Treasury is going to freeze every single asset Alberto has in the United States."

Lucian let out a breathless laugh, looking at me as if I had just pulled the moon from the sky.

"You didn't just stop the bleeding," he whispered. "You cut off his air supply."

"I told you once, Lucian," I said, stepping into his arms. "I don't need a protector. I just need a partner."
