Chapter 3 - The Gala of Ruin

The trap was set to spring on the night of the annual Bennett Foundation Winter Gala, the most prestigious, highly publicized charity event of the year.
The ballroom of the Drake Hotel was packed with five hundred of Chicago’s elite. Flashbulbs erupted as Mason worked the room, shaking hands with judges, real estate tycoons, and police commissioners. He looked like the undisputed king of the city, wearing a bespoke tuxedo, exuding the effortless, terrifying charm that had built his underworld empire.
Claire stood perfectly poised by his side, wearing a stunning, backless crimson gown that turned heads wherever she walked.
“You look incredible tonight,” Mason whispered in her ear, wrapping his arm around her waist for a photograph. “Play your cards right, and I might actually come home early tonight.”
It was a blatant, insulting lie. Claire knew for a fact that he had a suite booked under a false name at a nearby hotel for midnight.
“I’m counting on it,” Claire smiled, her eyes flashing with a dark, brilliant secret.
At ten o’clock, the time came for the keynote address. As the founder of the charity, Claire was scheduled to speak. She walked up to the podium, the spotlight hitting her crimson dress, illuminating her like a flame against the dark backdrop of the stage. The room fell into a respectful silence.
Mason stood in the front row, holding a glass of champagne, flanked by his loyal lieutenant, Grant Mercer. Mason looked bored, checking his Rolex, waiting for his wife to deliver her usual, sanitized speech about giving back to the community.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” Claire began, her voice ringing crystal clear through the massive sound system. “For seven years, I have stood before you as the face of the Bennett Foundation. We have built hospitals. We have funded schools. We have created a legacy of legitimate, honorable philanthropy.”
She paused, her eyes locking directly onto Mason in the front row.
“But true philanthropy requires honesty. And tonight, it is time for absolute, uncompromising honesty.”
Mason’s brow furrowed. He lowered his champagne glass. Grant Mercer shifted uncomfortably beside him.
“As of 9:00 PM this evening,” Claire announced, her tone shifting from warm to lethal. “The board of Bennett Global Holdings was legally dissolved. The commercial real estate portfolio, the logistics contracts, and the corporate bank accounts have been entirely liquidated.”
A low, confused murmur rippled through the crowd of investors and politicians. Mason’s face drained of color. He took a step forward, his jaw unhinging in pure shock.
“Claire, what the hell are you doing?” Mason hissed, trying to keep his voice low, but the panic was already bleeding through.
Claire didn't flinch. She leaned closer to the microphone. “Furthermore, I have officially resigned as the trustee of my husband’s estate. I have handed over all financial records, including several highly detailed, offline ledgers regarding undocumented cash flow, to the United States Attorney’s Office. The era of the Bennett empire is officially over.”
The ballroom erupted into absolute, unhinged chaos.

Flashbulbs went off in a blinding frenzy. Politicians frantically turned away from Mason, rushing toward the exits to distance themselves from a man who had just been publicly implicated in a federal crime.
Mason lunged toward the stage, his face contorted in a mask of feral, terrifying rage. But before his foot even hit the first step, the heavy double doors of the ballroom burst open. Dozens of federal agents in tactical gear flooded the room, their badges flashing under the chandeliers.
