Chapter 4 - The Kingdom Collapses

“Mason Bennett!” a federal agent shouted over the screaming crowd. “You are under arrest for racketeering, wire fraud, and money laundering! Keep your hands where I can see them!”
The untouchable mafia boss froze. His loyal lieutenant, Grant Mercer, didn't pull a weapon. Grant didn't try to defend his boss. The moment Grant realized the money was gone and the feds had the ledgers, he slowly backed away, blending into the panicked crowd, abandoning Mason instantly.
Mason was violently shoved against the linen-draped banquet table, his arms wrenched behind his back as the heavy steel handcuffs clicked shut around his wrists. The crystal champagne flutes crashed to the floor, shattering into a million pieces.
Claire walked slowly down the steps of the stage, her crimson dress sweeping across the floor. She approached the table where Mason was being held.
He looked up at her, his eyes wild with absolute, incomprehensible terror and fury. The man who had mocked her, who had treated her like a naive, desperate fool, was currently suffocating under the crushing weight of his own annihilation.
“You vindictive bitch,” Mason spat, struggling against the federal agents holding him down. “I will destroy you! You belong to me!”
“I never belonged to you, Mason,” Claire said, her voice eerily calm, cutting through the noise of the chaotic ballroom. “You thought I was the only one still trying to save our marriage. But you were wrong. I wasn't trying to save it. I was just waiting for the perfect moment to bury it.”
“You took everything!” Mason screamed, tears of sheer panic welling in his eyes as he realized he was facing the rest of his life in a concrete cell. “I have nothing!”
“You have exactly what you earned,” Claire corrected him smoothly.
She leaned in, dropping her voice so only he could hear. “By the way, Mason. When you call Chloe to ask for bail money, you should probably know she blocked your number the second my lawyers froze your accounts. She was never in love with you. She was in love with my money.”
Mason’s eyes widened in profound, agonizing defeat. The illusion of his power, his desirability, and his untouchable status completely evaporated, leaving him hollow and broken.

“Take him away,” Claire said to the federal agents, stepping back.
She watched without a single ounce of pity as the man who had tormented her for seven years was dragged out of the ballroom in handcuffs, his legacy permanently destroyed in front of the entire city.
