Chapter 3 - The Secret Her Father Left Behind

Lucian came to the hospital again that night.
This time, he did not bring flowers or jewelry.
He brought lawyers.
Three of them.
They stood outside my hospital room until Adriana stepped into the hallway and told them, in a voice so calm it sounded almost polite, that they could submit requests through the court like everyone else.
Lucian entered alone.
His face was harder than before.
“You knew about the trust,” he said.
I did not look up from Nico’s crib.
“My father told me about it years ago.”
“Then why did you never mention it?”
“Because you never asked what belonged to me. You only told me what belonged to you.”
Lucian sat in the chair beside the window.
The same chair that had been empty when our son was born.
“I never wanted to hurt you,” he said.
I looked at him.
“That is not true.”
His eyes darkened.
“I never wanted you to be afraid of me.”
“But I was.”
The room became quiet.
Lucian leaned forward.
“You have no idea what is happening outside this hospital.”
“Then explain it.”
He hesitated.
That was how I knew it was serious.
“My companies are being investigated,” he said. “Someone leaked confidential records. The shipping firm connected to your trust is now essential to keeping several contracts active.”
“And?”
“And I need you to sign an authorization.”
I almost smiled.
There it was.
The truth beneath his apology.
He needed something.
“You came here because you need my signature?”
“I came here because you are my wife.”
“I am your wife when you need access. I am inconvenient when I need you.”
Lucian looked toward Nico.
“I missed the birth. I know that.”
“You chose to miss it.”
He closed his eyes briefly.
“I made a mistake.”
“No,” I said. “You made a decision.”
Lucian stood.
“Serena, people are moving against me. If my business collapses, it will not only affect me. It will affect you and Nico.”
“You built your world on fear,” I replied. “Do not tell me that fear is now my responsibility.”
His expression changed.
For years, Lucian had used intimidation like a language.
But this time, he did not threaten me.
He looked tired.
Truly tired.
“There is something I need to tell you,” he said.
I waited.
“Bianca was not in Sicily because I wanted her.”
I laughed without humor.
“I saw the photo.”
“You saw what she wanted you to see.”
“Then tell me what I did not see.”
Lucian looked toward the closed door, making sure no one was listening.
“Bianca’s family has been trying to force an alliance with mine for years. Her father is connected to people who want control over the Moretti shipping routes.”
“And you went to Sicily to negotiate with her?”
“I went to stop a war.”
“By holding her hand on a terrace?”
“She threatened you.”
Every muscle in my body went still.
“What?”
Lucian’s voice dropped.
“She knew you were pregnant. She knew I did not know. She said if I did not meet her, she would make sure you never reached the hospital safely.”
Elena, who had been quietly sitting by the window, stood immediately.
“You expect us to believe that?”
Lucian looked at her.
“I do not care whether you believe me. I care whether Serena survives.”
I felt cold.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I thought I could handle it.”
“That is always your answer.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
“You left me alone while I gave birth.”
Lucian had no defense.
He looked down.
Then he pulled a small flash drive from his jacket.
“This contains recordings from the meeting. Bianca’s father discussing your father’s trust. They knew about the logistics firm. They knew it would pass to you.”
Adriana took the drive from him.
“We will have it reviewed.”
Lucian nodded.
Then he looked at Nico.
“Can I see him?”
I stared at him.
His face was different now.
Still powerful.
Still dangerous.
But also broken in a way I had never seen.
I lifted Nico carefully and placed him in Lucian’s arms.
Lucian froze.
His entire body went still.
Nico made a tiny sound and curled his fingers around Lucian’s thumb.
Lucian’s eyes filled with tears.
He turned away quickly, but I saw them.
For seven years, I had waited for him to become soft.
He had waited until it was too late.
“I will not ask you to forgive me,” he whispered.
“Good.”
“But I will keep him safe.”
I looked at my son.
Then at the man who had failed us both.
“You will not do it with guns, threats, or blood,” I said.
Lucian nodded slowly.
“Then tell me how.”
May you like
I looked at him.
“Start by telling the truth.”
