Chapter 6 - The Ghost of the Romano EmpirePeace is a fragile glass structure.

The moment you stop admiring its beauty and turn your back, someone is always waiting to throw a stone.
For three years, Lucian and I lived in a state of grace I had never thought possible. We did not rush into living together. We rebuilt our relationship with deliberate, careful precision. He stayed over on weekends. We had Sunday mornings making pancakes for Nico. Lucian’s legitimate real estate and logistics firm, Moretti Holdings, was breaking ground on a massive, fully transparent commercial district in Manhattan.
My life had blossomed too. I had used my father’s trust to open The Haven, a legal and housing sanctuary for women escaping financial and domestic abuse.
We were untouchable. Or so I believed.
It started on a freezing Tuesday morning in November. I was in my Brooklyn office, reviewing the legal frameworks for a new safe house, when Elena burst through the door without knocking.
"Serena," she said, her chest heaving. "Turn on the financial news network. Now."
I grabbed the remote and turned on the flat screen mounted on the wall. The breaking news ticker flashing across the bottom of the screen made my blood run cold.
Hostile Takeover Bid: European Consortium 'Romano Trust' Acquires Controlling Debt in Moretti Holdings' Latest Manhattan Mega-Project.
I stared at the screen. Lucian’s project was fully funded by legitimate American banks. A hostile takeover of the debt was legally impossible unless someone on the inside had deliberately triggered a vulnerability clause.
My phone vibrated on the desk. It was Lucian.
"Did you see it?" he asked. His voice wasn't panicked, but it carried the low, dangerous frequency of a predator that had just caught a scent.
"I'm watching it right now," I said, my mind racing. "Lucian, who is running the Romano Trust? Bianca fled the country. Her father is under federal indictment."
"It’s Dante," Lucian replied smoothly, though the tension was undeniable. "Bianca’s older brother. He operated entirely in the shadows in Milan. When Bianca and her father fell, Dante inherited the ashes of their empire. He blames me for their exile. He’s spent the last three years consolidating his remaining assets to launch a purely financial attack. He wants to bankrupt my legitimate company, force me into default, and take the Manhattan project for himself."
"Can he do it?"
"He bought out three of my minority partners overnight," Lucian said, the old mafia boss bleeding through the polished CEO exterior. "He has enough leverage to halt the construction and bleed me dry in court."
"Where are you?" I asked, grabbing my coat.
"I am heading to the construction site," Lucian said. "I have to speak to the bank executives before they pull the remaining loans. Stay at the foundation, Serena. I have increased your security detail. Do not go anywhere alone."
"Lucian—"
He hung up.
I stood in my office, looking at the television. Dante Romano was old money, old blood, and old rules. He believed that because Lucian had stepped away from the violence, he was weak. He thought he could use corporate warfare to break the man who had once ruled New York.
I picked up my phone and dialed Adriana Vale, my attorney and the sharpest legal mind in the city.
"Adriana," I said the moment she answered. "I need every unsealed financial record you have on the Romano syndicates from the Marco Vitale investigation. I need it an hour ago."
Lucian wanted to fight this on a construction site.
I was going to fight it in the light.
When Dante Romano walked into the lobby of The Haven four hours later, he didn't look like a mobster. He wore a bespoke silver suit, carried a designer briefcase, and moved with the aristocratic arrogance of a man who believed the world owed him its obedience.
I met him in the glass atrium. I didn't hide behind my desk. I stood in the center of the room, wearing a sharp crimson blazer, waiting.
"Serena Moretti," Dante sneered in a thick Italian accent. "I must admit, you’ve done a charming job dressing up this charity. It’s very… quaint."
"The Moretti name is no longer on my ID, Mr. Romano," I replied coldly. "And this is a private facility. You are trespassing."
Dante chuckled. "I am here to offer a trade. Your husband’s empire is crumbling as we speak. I own his debt. By Friday, I will own his company. But I am a reasonable man. Sign over the logistics firm your father left you—the one keeping Lucian’s supply chains alive—and I might let him keep his personal bank accounts."
I didn't blink.
"You are threatening the father of my child in my place of business," I said softly.
"I am simply offering a business deal," Dante smiled.
"Is that a threat?"
The voice did not belong to me. It came from the sweeping staircase behind me.
Dante stiffened as Lucian descended the stairs. Lucian wore a dark, tailored suit, moving with a terrifying, silent grace. He stepped off the last stair and came to stand directly behind my right shoulder.
He didn't look like a legitimate CEO. In that moment, he looked like the violent, untouchable phantom the underworld whispered about.
"Dante," Lucian murmured, his voice a low, lethal rumble. "If you ever walk into Serena’s building and threaten her again, you won't need to worry about real estate. You’ll need to worry about breathing."
Dante swallowed hard, taking a calculated step back. "You can’t intimidate me with street tactics, Lucian. We operate in the corporate world now. And in that world, I hold all the cards."
Dante turned and marched out.
Lucian stepped closer, wrapping his arms around my waist from behind, pulling me back flush against his chest.
"I should have broken his jaw," Lucian whispered darkly.
"No," I said, resting my hands over his. "He wants you to react with violence. He wants to prove you’re exactly the thug he thinks you are."
May you like
"He is going to try to take this from you, Serena. I will not allow it."
"He can try," I said, my eyes narrowing with a fierce, brilliant determination. "But Dante Romano is about to learn that a woman who built her life from the ground up doesn't scare easily. If he wants a war in the boardroom, we’re going to give him a massacre."
