Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the Room

Ethan’s hands—hands that routinely signed billion-dollar acquisitions without a single tremor—were shaking. He stared down at Lily’s sleeping face, his thumb gently brushing a dark curl away from her forehead with an agonizing, fragile reverence.

"Caleb died twenty-two months ago," Ethan whispered, his voice cracking beneath the weight of a grief he had hidden from the world. "A hit-and-run. The police called it a tragic accident. But the Callahan family has enemies. I always suspected it was a targeted hit. I just never knew why he was in that neighborhood."

I sat frozen on the leather sofa, the air completely knocked out of my lungs.

Caleb hadn't abandoned me. He hadn't gotten scared of being a father and run away. He was dead. The man who drank terrible coffee, who promised to build a life with me, had been a billionaire in hiding—and he had been murdered just two weeks after finding out about our baby.

Tears finally spilled over my eyelashes, hot and fast. I buried my face in my hands, a suppressed sob tearing through my chest.

I expected Ethan to call for his assistant or to ask me to leave so he could process the shock alone. Instead, I heard the soft rustle of his suit jacket.

He sat down on the sofa right beside me, still cradling Lily securely against his chest with one arm. With his free hand, the coldest, most untouchable man in Chicago gently pulled me into his side, letting me cry into his shoulder.

"He was trying to escape," Ethan murmured softly, resting his chin against my hair. "Our father was a ruthless man. He built Callahan Global Holdings on extortion and ruined lives. Caleb hated it. He walked away from his trust fund and disappeared to build an honest life. He found you. You were his sanctuary."

"He told me his last name was Parker," I choked out, wiping my eyes. "He said he didn't have any family left."

"To him, he didn't," Ethan said, his jaw tightening into a hard, unforgiving line. "But he has family now. You and Lily are the only pieces of my brother I have left."

Ethan looked down at my daughter, his dark eyes hardening into polished steel. The sorrow was instantly replaced by a terrifying, absolute authority.

"You are not going back to your apartment," he stated. "If whoever killed Caleb finds out he left behind an heir, your lives will be in immediate danger. From this moment forward, you and Lily belong to me. I will protect you with every resource, every dollar, and every breath I have."
