Chapter 14 - The Checkmate GalaThe night of the APT Vietnam launch gala was crisp, clear, and absolutely spectacular.

The private island in the bay looked like a glowing jewel. Thousands of white orchids and deep blue hydrangeas adorned the massive, open-air pavilions. The background designs, strictly adhering to the APT company logo colors, were projected flawlessly across the sheer cliff faces of the island. Champagne flowed like water, and the two thousand tech titans, celebrities, and international dignitaries mingled in sheer awe of the production.
I had pulled off the impossible.
I stood on the balcony of the VIP lounge, wearing a stunning, custom-designed silver gown, holding a glass of sparkling water. Julian stood beside me, looking like a cinematic masterpiece in a tailored midnight-blue tuxedo, his hand resting warmly on the small of my back.
At exactly 9:00 PM, Victoria Kensington made her grand entrance. She strutted into the VIP lounge wearing a diamond necklace that cost more than most small countries, looking incredibly smug. She expected the island to be empty. She expected the ferries to be stalled at the docks due to a ticketing crash.
When she saw the roaring, massive crowd of elites celebrating the flawless event, she physically stopped in her tracks. The color violently drained from her arrogant face.
She immediately pulled her phone from her clutch, her hands shaking, frantically typing a message—undoubtedly screaming at her dark-web hackers to figure out why the attack had failed.
"Having network issues, Victoria?" I asked, stepping out of the shadows of the balcony, Julian right by my side.
Victoria snapped her head up, her eyes wide with a terrifying mixture of shock and sheer panic. "How... how did you do this?" she stammered, entirely dropping the polished, untouchable heiress facade.
"You really should invest in better hackers," I smiled sweetly, taking a step toward her. "I have offshore tech consultants who eat billion-dollar botnets for breakfast. Your little DDoS attack on my ticketing servers was absorbed, filtered, and entirely neutralized by a proprietary traffic platform before you even put your makeup on tonight."
Victoria took a trembling step backward. "You... you can't prove anything. I’m your boss. I own Vanguard!"
"You own a majority share," Julian corrected her, his deep voice carrying the absolute authority of a judge handing down a sentence. "But you don't own the board of directors. And you certainly don't own the FBI."
I pulled a sleek, black USB drive from my clutch. "My tech consultants didn't just block your attack, Victoria. They traced the encrypted payments you made to the botnet farm right back to your personal trust fund accounts. Corporate cyber-sabotage is a federal felony."
Victoria looked at the USB drive like it was a live grenade. "Sandra, wait. Please."
"I told you fourteen days ago, Victoria. You don't know how to work. You only know how to throw tantrums with your father's money," I said, my voice completely devoid of pity. "I sent this exact data packet to Vanguard’s supreme board of directors and the Federal Trade Commission an hour ago. You intentionally tried to sabotage a multi-million-dollar corporate event to satisfy a personal vendetta."
"You’re fired, Victoria," Julian said softly. "The board is invoking the emergency morality clause to forcefully buy out your shares at a massive loss. Your father is already on the phone with his lawyers trying to keep you out of federal prison."

Victoria looked around the luxurious, flawless gala she had designed as my execution chamber, realizing that I had turned it into her own coffin. Without another word, she turned and fled the VIP lounge, running toward the docks in absolute, humiliating defeat.
I watched her go, feeling the last, lingering shadow of the Kensington family completely evaporate from my life. I turned to Julian, a massive, genuine smile breaking across my face, and kissed him deeply under the brilliant, shining stars of the California sky.
