Chapter 18 - The Virtual TrojanWe couldn't fight fake news with corporate press releases. The public didn't want the boring truth; they wanted the drama. To dismantle Evelyn’s syndicate, I had to infiltrate it, poison it from the inside, and blow it up in front of her face.

I bypassed Vanguard’s traditional marketing department entirely. Instead, I sequestered my most brilliant, cutthroat digital strategists into a private lab.
“Evelyn is using AI to generate fake scandals,” I told my team, the glow of their monitors illuminating the dark room. “We are going to use AI to generate the ultimate Trojan Horse.”
We spent the next week building a highly advanced, flawlessly realistic Virtual KOC (Key Opinion Consumer). We named her "Chloe." Using cutting-edge text-to-video AI rendering software, we created a digital persona who looked, sounded, and acted like a high-level, disgruntled corporate insider. She was absolutely stunning, highly expressive, and entirely fake.
We didn't launch Chloe on our own pages. Instead, we injected her directly into the bloodstream of Evelyn’s network.
My team utilized our own aggressive, suspenseful drama scripts. We had Chloe record a series of highly emotive, “leaked” confessional videos. In the videos, Chloe tearfully claimed to be a former employee of Pinnacle Events (Evelyn’s company). But instead of spreading lies, Chloe was programmed to reveal incredibly specific, verifiable financial truths about Evelyn’s failing company—truths we had legally acquired through public SEC filings but wrapped in irresistible, scandalous clickbait packaging.
“The Terrifying Truth About Pinnacle Events: Why The CEO Is Bleeding Millions...”
We used the exact same tactics Evelyn favored: massive curiosity gaps, darkened article thumbnail generation, and hyper-targeted ad copywriting designed for the American drama demographic. Then, we discreetly purchased targeted ad space to push Chloe’s videos directly to the followers of Evelyn’s fake Facebook news pages.
The trap was utterly flawless.
Evelyn’s black-market VIA clone accounts, programmed by basic AI scripts to automatically share and boost any high-engagement drama content related to corporate hospitality, blindly picked up Chloe’s videos.
Evelyn’s own multi-million-dollar fake news network began aggressively promoting our Virtual KOC.
Within forty-eight hours, the internet had completely forgotten about the fake rumors regarding Lumina. Instead, millions of Americans were absolutely captivated by “Chloe’s” dramatic, suspenseful expose on Evelyn Sterling. Pinnacle Events' stock plummeted by twenty percent in a single afternoon.
Evelyn was paying for the very digital infrastructure that was publicly executing her own company.
At 11:00 PM on a Thursday, my phone rang. The caller ID was unlisted, but I picked it up immediately.
“You manipulative, psychotic bitch,” Evelyn’s voice hissed through the speaker, vibrating with unfiltered, hysterical rage. “I know it’s you. I know you created that fake digital whistleblower! Take the videos down immediately, or I swear to God, I will bury you!”
“Hello, Evelyn,” I replied calmly, sipping a glass of Julian’s reserve Cabernet, staring out at the beautiful Napa Valley vineyards bathed in moonlight. “I have no idea what you’re talking about. But whoever this 'Chloe' is, she certainly knows how to write a compelling headline. The click-through rates must be astronomical.”
“I will destroy you in court, Sandra!” she screamed.
“You can try,” I whispered, my voice turning to absolute ice. “But to sue me, you’ll have to formally admit to a judge that the videos are being hosted and boosted entirely by your own network of illegal, black-market VIA clone accounts. You’ll have to hand the FBI the keys to your cyber-smear campaign. So go ahead, Evelyn. Call your lawyers. I’ll wait.”

She slammed the phone down.
I smiled, taking another sip of the rich, dark wine. Checkmate.
