Chapter 1 - The Silent Acquisition

I did not argue. I did not cry.
I sat quietly for the remainder of the dinner, sipping my sparkling water while Paige dictated the itinerary of a vacation I was explicitly forbidden from attending. Oliver remained rigid beside me, his dinner untouched, his hand never leaving mine. When the dessert plates were cleared, he stood up abruptly, pulling my chair back for me.
"We are leaving," Oliver announced, his voice carrying a dangerous, quiet edge that finally made his father look up.
"Oliver, darling, don't be dramatic," Paige sighed, dabbing her mouth with her linen napkin. "Julia understands. Not everyone is built for the pressure of high society travel. It’s a kindness, really."
"Goodnight, Paige," I said smoothly.
I didn't wait for her to respond. I turned and walked out of the dining room, my heels clicking rhythmically against the hardwood floor.
The moment the doors of our town car closed behind us, Oliver slammed his fist against the leather partition. "I am calling my father tomorrow. I’m pulling my trust out of the family office. I am done, Julia. I am completely done letting her treat you like some charity case."
I reached over and gently smoothed the lapel of his jacket.
"Oliver," I said softly. "Do not pull your trust."
"Julia, I swear to God, if you tell me to turn the other cheek one more time—"
"I’m not telling you to turn the other cheek," I interrupted, a slow, genuine smile spreading across my face. I opened my evening clutch and pulled out my phone. "I’m telling you to pack a bag. Summer clothing. Linen."
Oliver blinked, his anger momentarily stalled by confusion. "What? Why?"
"Because your mother has excellent taste in destinations," I said, tapping open my encrypted email client. "Royal Pearl Island is magnificent this time of year."
"Julia, we aren't going. If we show up, she will just use it as another excuse to humiliate you in front of the resort staff."
"She can't," I replied, typing a quick, two-line email to my primary wealth manager in Geneva.
Execute the majority shareholder proxy for Azure Hospitality Group. I want full operational control of the Royal Pearl property by tomorrow morning.
I locked my phone and looked out the window at the passing city lights.

"Why can't she?" Oliver asked, his brow furrowed.
"Because," I said, leaning my head against his shoulder, "my holding company bought Royal Pearl out of bankruptcy two years ago. Paige didn't book a vacation, Oliver. She just made a reservation at my house."
