Chapter 3 - The Refinement of Power

My voice cut through the heavy tropical air like a silver bell.
Paige froze. Vanessa gasped loudly, dropping her expensive leather handbag onto the limestone floor. Richard actually looked up from his phone.
I stepped out from the shaded corridor and walked into the center of the sunlit lobby, Oliver right beside me.
If someone had been standing in that lobby to capture the exact moment Paige Anderson’s manufactured reality shattered into a million irreparable pieces—a scene perfectly immortalized in the file —they would have seen a masterpiece of inverted power. In the foreground, Paige stands in her loud, chaotic kaftan, her mouth literally hanging open in shock, her sunglasses pushed up into her hair. Behind her, Richard and Vanessa look like they have seen a ghost. And standing directly across from them, framed by the blinding blue ocean and the deferential posture of the resort staff, am I—clad in effortless cream, radiating the absolute, unbothered calm of a woman who owns the very floor they are standing on.
"Julia?" Paige choked out, the word scraping against her throat. "What... what are you doing here? How did you get here?"
"I flew in yesterday," I said, stopping a few feet away from her. "The private airstrip on the neighboring island is very convenient."
Paige’s eyes darted from me to Oliver, her brain frantically trying to reassemble the hierarchy she was so desperate to maintain. Her face flushed a deep, ugly red.
"Oliver," she snapped, her voice trembling with rage. "You brought her? I explicitly told you this was a family retreat! You defied me to bring this... this girl to a place she doesn't even belong?"
She turned back to Henri, slamming her hand on the desk. "Security! I want this woman removed from the lobby immediately! She is harassing my family!"
Henri didn't move. He didn't blink. He simply looked at me and bowed his head slightly.
"Madame Moreno," Henri said, his voice ringing with absolute respect. "Shall I have security escort the Anderson party back to the seaplane?"
The silence that fell over the lobby was absolute.
The ocean waves crashing against the pier suddenly sounded deafening.

Paige stared at the General Manager, her hand still frozen in the air. "Madame... what did you just call her?"
"Henri is asking me if I want to have you evicted, Paige," I clarified, my voice gentle, almost melodic. "Because, as he tried to explain to you, the Presidential Villa is occupied by the owner. Me."
