Chapter 1 - The Tuesday Night Tape

The silence that fell over my mother’s kitchen was absolute. The soft jazz playing on the living room stereo suddenly sounded incredibly loud.

Amber’s condescending smile vanished, her carefully cultivated aura of superiority evaporating in a single, devastating second. She turned her head slowly, her eyes locking onto Ryan. The color drained from her face as she looked at the man who had promised her a beautiful, committed future just moments ago.

“What is she talking about, Ryan?” Amber asked, her voice tight and high-pitched.

“She’s... she’s making it up,” Ryan stammered, his eyes darting frantically between me, Amber, and my mother. The polished, reasonable man who had been sipping wine and playing the charming guest was entirely gone. He was sweating. “She’s just trying to start a fight because she’s bitter. I haven't been to her house in weeks.”

I didn't argue with him. I didn't raise my voice. I simply reached into my purse and pulled out my phone.

With a few quick taps, I opened my security system’s cloud archive. I didn't just hold the phone up for them to see. I swiped the screen, casting the high-definition video directly to the massive smart TV mounted on the wall in the adjoining living room.

The screen flickered to life. The audio connected to the surround sound speakers my mother had installed last Christmas.

Suddenly, my husband’s desperate, tear-soaked voice echoed through the entire house.

“Please, just open the door,” the digital version of Ryan begged, standing on my front porch in the freezing rain, his face pressed near the camera lens. “I know you’re in there. I am so sorry. I made a massive mistake.”

In the kitchen, Amber took a step backward, her hand flying to her mouth.

On the screen, my voice responded through the two-way speaker. “Go home to Amber, Ryan.”

“Amber is nothing!” Ryan’s voice boomed through the living room, vibrating with pathetic desperation. “She means absolutely nothing to me! It’s a game, it’s a distraction because I was terrified of losing you! I don't love her! I don't even like her! I just want to come home. Please let me come home. I’ll do anything you want.”

I stopped the video.

The silence that followed was heavy, suffocating, and absolutely magnificent.
