Chapter 3 - The Enabler's Guilt

Ryan stood in the center of the kitchen, dripping wine onto the pristine hardwood floor, his face buried in his hands.
My mother, who had spent the last two hours orchestrating this twisted, toxic fantasy of a blended, forgiving family, finally snapped out of her shock. But instead of apologizing to me, her deeply ingrained habit of protecting the peace at all costs reared its ugly head.
“How could you do this?” my mother cried, looking at me with frantic, accusing eyes. “I just wanted one peaceful holiday! I wanted everyone to get along! Why did you have to play that video? You humiliated him!”
“No, Mom,” I corrected her, the last remaining thread of my patience completely snapping. I didn't yell, but the absolute, freezing authority in my voice made my brother and my aunt instinctively take a step back. “He humiliated himself. And you enabled him. You invited the woman who actively destroyed my marriage into your home, poured her a glass of wine, and demanded that I hug her.”
“He is family!” my mother sobbed defensively, gesturing wildly at Ryan. “People make mistakes!”

“He isn't family,” I said, stepping closer to her, ensuring she felt the full weight of my boundaries. “He is a liar who manipulated you into believing he was moving forward, while simultaneously begging me in the middle of the night to take him back. You were so terrified of losing the illusion of a perfect family that you were willing to sacrifice your own daughter's dignity to maintain it.”
My mother opened her mouth to argue, but she had absolutely no defense left. She looked at Ryan, finally seeing the cowardly, manipulative fraud he truly was, and the fight completely drained out of her. She sank into a kitchen chair, burying her face in her hands.
