Chapter 19 - The Calm After the Storm

The fallout from the Washington D.C. gala was seismic.

Victoria Pierce was denied bail, completely isolated from her offshore wealth. Her arrest sent shockwaves through the global financial sector. Vanguard Holdings was dismantled, its assets seized by the federal government and redistributed to compensate the victims of their predatory practices.

Julian’s law firm was fully exonerated. His reputation skyrocketed, cementing him as one of the most brilliant, untouchable legal minds in the country.

And Marlo Financial? I had to hire ten new accountants just to handle the influx of elite clients begging for our services.

It was late May. The brutal Chicago winter had finally surrendered to a breathtaking, vibrant spring.

I was sitting in my glass-enclosed office, reviewing the final floral budget for our wedding, which was only two weeks away. The door opened, and Claire walked in, carrying two iced coffees. She looked radiant, deeply fulfilled by her booming non-profit work.

"You need a break, Viv," Claire said, setting a coffee on my desk and taking the chair opposite me. "You’ve been staring at spreadsheets for six hours. The wedding is fully paid for. You can stop doing math."

I laughed, closing my laptop. "I can't help it. Balancing numbers is my love language."

"Well, you need to switch languages," Claire teased, taking a sip of her drink. Her smile softened, her eyes filling with a deep, profound gratitude. "I was thinking about the last three years today. About Bennett. About Victoria. About everything we survived."

"We walked through fire," I agreed, resting my hands on the desk.

"No," Claire corrected gently. "You walked through fire. And you dragged me out of it. For my entire life, I thought I was the main character. I thought my beauty and my charm were the things that kept our family afloat. But it was always you, Vivian. You were the foundation. And I am so incredibly sorry it took me so long to see it."

Tears pricked the corners of my eyes. The old wounds—the years of feeling invisible, practical, and overlooked—finally, permanently healed.

"You don't need to apologize, Claire," I whispered, reaching across the desk to squeeze her hand. "We grew up. We figured it out. And I wouldn't trade the woman you have become for anything in the world."

The door to my office clicked open again.

Julian leaned against the doorframe, wearing a tailored charcoal suit, his tie slightly loosened. He looked devastatingly handsome and utterly at peace.

"Am I interrupting a sisterly bonding moment?" Julian asked, a warm smile playing on his lips.

"You are," Claire laughed, standing up. "But I’ll allow it. I have to get back to the shelter anyway. I will see you both at the rehearsal dinner."

Claire hugged me tightly and gave Julian a quick kiss on the cheek before sweeping out of the office.

Julian walked over, closing the door behind him. He walked behind my chair, resting his strong hands on my shoulders, massaging the tension from my muscles.

"The final injunction against Victoria was signed this morning," Julian murmured, pressing a soft kiss to the top of my head. "She pleaded guilty to avoid a drawn-out trial. She’s looking at twenty-five years."

I let out a long, ragged breath of absolute relief. The monsters were truly, permanently locked away.

"It’s over," I said, leaning my head back against him.

"It is," Julian agreed, moving around the desk to pull me up into his arms. "The war is over, Vivian. From now on, the only thing we have to plan is our future."

I rested my hands flat against his chest, feeling the steady, strong beat of his heart. For so long, I had built my life around anticipating disaster. I had prepared for betrayal. I had braced for impact.

But looking into Julian’s dark, loving eyes, I realized that I didn't need to brace myself anymore. I was safe.

"I love you," I whispered, the words holding the weight of a thousand victories.

"I love you more," Julian promised, kissing me deeply. "Now, close the laptop, Ms. Marlo. We have a wedding to get ready for."
