Chapter 1 - The Wiretap Bait

The heavy rain battered the windows of my study, drumming a relentless, chaotic rhythm against the glass. I handed Clara the glass of warm milk laced with honey, wrapped a second cashmere throw around her trembling shoulders, and waited for Dr. Aris to arrive.
My phone buzzed again on the mahogany desk. It vibrated aggressively against the polished wood, lighting up with another message from Dominic.
I know she’s there, Victoria. I have two cruisers from the local precinct parked at the end of your street right now. Send her out, or I’ll have them kick your door in for kidnapping. You don't know who you are messing with.
I stared at the glowing screen, taking a slow, deliberate sip of my scotch. Dominic Ward was a creature of immense, suffocating arrogance. He had built a sprawling logistics empire in the port district, utilizing his wealth to buy politicians, bribe harbor inspectors, and purchase the loyalty of half the local police force. He thought his money made him a god. He thought it gave him the right to treat my daughter like property.
What he failed to realize was that for the past eighteen months, a joint task force of the FBI and the DEA had been meticulously mapping his illicit smuggling routes. And because local corruption was so deeply embedded in the county, the federal prosecutors had bypassed the regional magistrates entirely. They had brought the wiretap applications and the sealed raid warrants directly to my chambers.
I picked up the phone. For a wiretap to be truly devastating, you needed the target to speak with absolute, uninhibited hubris.
Clara is terrified, Dominic, I typed, my thumbs moving with precise, cold intention. Please. I don't want any trouble with the police. What do you want me to do?
The response came less than ten seconds later. He was eager. He was drunk on his own perceived power.
I want you to open the front door and hand my wife over to my officers. If you try to call anyone, if you try to get a lawyer, I will personally see to it that your pension is stripped, your house is seized, and Clara is locked in a psych ward before the baby is even born. My word is the law in this town, Victoria. Do not test me.
I took a screenshot of the text, my heart beating with a dark, predatory rhythm. My word is the law. He had just explicitly threatened a federal judge and admitted to manipulating law enforcement across an active, federally monitored communication line. He was practically braiding his own noose.
The doorbell rang. It wasn't the police. It was Dr. Aris, carrying his black medical bag, soaked from the rain. I ushered him quietly into the den where Clara was resting. After a tense, terrifying twenty minutes of examination, the doctor finally offered a reassuring smile.
"The baby's heart rate is strong, Clara," Dr. Aris said gently, packing his stethoscope away. "No signs of placental abruption. But you are suffering from extreme physical and emotional trauma. You need absolute bed rest."

"He's going to come for me," Clara wept, clutching my hand, her knuckles white. "Mom, he has the police in his pocket. They’ll arrest you. They’ll take me back."
"Nobody is taking you anywhere, my love," I whispered, pressing a fierce kiss to her bruised forehead. "The men Dominic owns are very small fish. And we are about to drain the entire ocean."
