Chapter 3 - The Thunder and the Law

Dominic frowned, the sudden, chilling shift in my demeanor momentarily throwing him off balance. "What are you talking about?"

"I am talking about the fact that you do not own the federal government," I said, my voice cutting through the storm with absolute, uncompromising authority.

Before Dominic could respond, the street completely erupted.

It didn't happen with sirens. It happened with a synchronized, overwhelming display of absolute tactical supremacy. Six unmarked black tactical vans materialized from the darkness at the end of the street, roaring up the driveway and blocking the police cruisers in completely. The rear doors of the vans burst open before the vehicles even came to a complete halt.

Dozens of heavily armed FBI agents and United States Marshals poured out into the rain, wearing tactical gear and Kevlar vests emblazoned with bold yellow letters.

"FBI! Nobody move! Keep your hands where I can see them!" the lead agent roared over a megaphone, the red laser sights of multiple rifles instantly cutting through the rain to center directly on Dominic and the two corrupt police officers.

The local sergeant panicked. He instinctively reached for his sidearm.

"Drop it!" a Marshal screamed, racking a shotgun with a sound that froze the sergeant’s blood. "Federal agents! Hands in the air, right now!"

The two corrupt cops, suddenly realizing they were completely outgunned and entirely out of their depth, threw their hands into the air, dropping to their knees in the mud. The badges they had disgraced were practically worthless in the face of federal supremacy.

Dominic stood frozen, his umbrella slipping from his fingers to bounce down the brick steps. The arrogant, untouchable king of the local precinct looked completely, utterly terrified.

The Special Agent in Charge, a tall, imposing man named Vance, walked up the driveway, completely ignoring the kneeling local cops. He walked directly toward Dominic, pulling a thick, sealed document from his tactical vest.

"Dominic Ward, you are under arrest for federal racketeering, narcotics smuggling, wire fraud, and the corruption of public officials," Agent Vance stated, his voice a lethal, flat monotone.

"This is a mistake!" Dominic shrieked, his voice cracking, backing away until his tailored suit hit the brick pillar of the porch. "You can't do this! I want my lawyer! I want to speak to the local magistrate!"

"The local magistrate has been detained by our corruption task force," Agent Vance replied coldly.

"Then who the hell authorized this raid?!" Dominic screamed, absolute panic stripping away every ounce of his charm.

I stepped forward to the edge of the porch, looking down at the man who had bruised my daughter's face.

"I did," I said.

Dominic whipped his head toward me, his eyes wide, his mouth hanging open in sheer disbelief.

"I am the Chief Judge of the United States District Court for this district, Dominic," I told him, projecting my voice so it echoed clearly over the rain and the armed agents. "The wiretaps capturing your smuggling routes? I authorized them. The financial freezes on your offshore accounts? I signed them. And the audio of you threatening a federal judge and admitting to bribing local law enforcement on my porch? I just recorded it."

Dominic’s knees gave out. He collapsed onto the wet brick steps, weeping openly as two federal marshals grabbed his arms, wrenching them violently behind his back. The heavy steel handcuffs clicked shut with a resounding, beautiful finality.
