Chapter 3 - The Hostage and the King

Victor Thorne’s private estate was a sprawling compound on the edge of Long Island, hidden behind high stone walls and wrought-iron gates.
He expected the police. He expected federal agents.
He didn't expect a billionaire CEO to breach his front gates with three armored vehicles and a dozen heavily armed private security operatives.
The heavy wooden doors of the estate splintered as Marcus kicked them open. I walked into the grand foyer, completely ignoring the chaotic shouting of Thorne’s guards as my men systematically disarmed them and forced them to the marble floor.
I found Thorne in his sprawling home office.
He was standing behind his desk, his face pale, a suppressed pistol trembling in his hand.
And there she was.
Emma.
She was tied to a heavy leather chair, a bruise blossoming along her jawline, her clothes torn and disheveled. But when she looked up and saw me standing in the doorway, there was no fear in her eyes. There was only absolute, breathtaking defiance.
"Jason," Thorne stammered, lowering his weapon just a fraction of an inch as the red laser sights of my men painted his chest. "This... this is a misunderstanding. She stole from me. She’s a corporate spy."
"She is the mother of my children," I said softly.
The words echoed through the silent room like a death sentence. Thorne’s eyes widened in absolute horror as the reality of his mistake crashed over him.
"You brought her here to silence her," I continued, walking slowly toward the desk. I didn't draw a weapon. I didn't need to. The sheer, overwhelming gravity of my power suffocated the room. "You thought she was just a disposable accountant. A single mother with no one to protect her."
"I didn't know!" Thorne begged, dropping the gun onto the desk and raising his hands. "Take her! Just give me the drive back, Jason, and we can pretend this never happened."
"The drive is already with the SEC," Emma interrupted, her voice perfectly steady, ringing with an authority that made my heart hammer with pride.
Thorne froze. I stopped walking.
Emma looked at her former boss with absolute disgust. "Did you really think I’d trust my sons' lives to a single flash drive? I coded a dead-man's switch on your servers, Victor. When I didn't log in at 9:00 AM this morning, the encrypted files automatically mass-emailed to the FBI, the IRS, and every cartel you've been stealing from. You don't have an empire anymore. You have a prison sentence."
A slow, lethal smile spread across my face. I had come here to save a damsel in distress. I hadn't realized I was rescuing a queen who had already checkmated the king.
"Marcus," I ordered, not taking my eyes off Emma.
May you like
"Sir?"
"Hold Mr. Thorne here until the FBI arrives," I commanded. "And ensure he understands that if he ever speaks my wife's name again, prison will be the safest place for him."
