Chapter 4 - The Empire Shared

I walked around the desk and pulled a pocket knife from my suit, carefully slicing the thick zip-ties binding Emma's wrists.

The moment she was free, she didn't collapse. She stood up, her breath hitching as she looked into my eyes for the first time in five years.

"Are they safe?" she whispered frantically. "Liam and Lucas—"

"They are safe," I murmured, my voice thick with an emotion I had suppressed for half a decade. "They are in my office. They are eating pancakes, and they are protected by an army."

Tears finally spilled over her eyelashes. She swayed slightly, the adrenaline leaving her body, and I caught her, pulling her flush against my chest. I buried my face in her hair, breathing in the scent of her, the reality that she was alive and in my arms finally breaking through my cold exterior.

"I am so sorry, Emma," I whispered fiercely against her temple. "I was a fool. I chased money because I thought it was the only way to be powerful. I didn't realize that the only thing of value I ever had was you."

Emma pulled back just enough to look at me, her hands resting flat against the lapels of my tailored suit. The exhausted, struggling single mother was gone. In her place was a woman forged in fire, standing as my absolute equal.

"You aren't a fool, Jason," she said softly, reaching up to wipe a stray tear from my face. "But you are going to have to prove to me that you're ready to be a father."

"I will spend the rest of my life proving it," I vowed.

One Year Later

The boardroom of Miller Financial was silent as twenty of Manhattan's most powerful executives stared at the quarterly projections on the massive glass screen.

"As you can see," the clear, authoritative voice echoed from the head of the table, "our aggressive restructuring of the acquired Thorne assets has increased our net profit by forty percent this quarter."

I sat to her right, leaning back in my leather chair, a proud smile playing on my lips.

Emma stood at the front of the room, wearing a sharp, tailored navy suit, commanding the attention of every billionaire in the room. She wasn't an invisible accountant anymore. She was the Chief Financial Officer and equal partner of my firm.

When the meeting concluded and the executives filed out, I stood up and walked over to her, wrapping my arms around her waist from behind and pressing a kiss to her neck.

"Brilliant presentation, Mrs. Miller," I murmured.

"Thank you, Mr. Miller," she smiled, leaning back against my chest.

The heavy glass door of the boardroom swung open.

Liam and Lucas charged into the room, their backpacks bouncing against their shoulders, both wearing matching miniature suits that they absolutely insisted on wearing whenever they visited the office.

"Daddy! Mommy!" Liam shouted, running straight into my legs.

I laughed, scooping him up with one arm and catching Lucas with the other. My office wasn't cold and silent anymore. It was filled with framed finger-paintings, messy toys, and the beautiful, chaotic noise of the family I had almost lost.

I looked at Emma, the brilliant, fearless woman who had forced me to tear down my walls, and I knew with absolute certainty that I was finally the richest man in the world.
