Chapter 5 - The Final Echo

Four years later, the Denver rain still feels exactly as cold as it did on that anniversary night.

I sit in a cramped, poorly lit cubicle on the third floor of a mid-level commercial drafting firm. I am no longer a CEO. I no longer stand on stages, and I no longer see my name on the side of gleaming skyscrapers. I am a mid-level project manager, processing permits for strip malls and warehouse renovations, taking orders from men a decade younger than me.

During my lunch break, I walk down to the corner bodega to buy a cheap sandwich. As I wait in line at the register, I glance at the magazine rack.

Staring back at me from the cover of Architectural Digest is Rebecca.

She looks absolutely stunning, standing on the sweeping cedar deck of the glass-and-timber cabin in the Rockies. The headline reads: The Visionary Behind Pine Ridge Holdings: How Rebecca Bennett Built an Empire in the Mountains.

I stare at the photograph, the agonizing weight of my own arrogance pressing down on my chest until I can barely breathe. She achieved the dream. She built the masterpiece. She is living the exact life I had promised her, but she is living it entirely without me.

I reach into the inner pocket of my cheap, worn-out suit jacket. My fingers brush against the edge of a cream-colored envelope. The paper is frayed now, softened by four years of being carried in my pocket every single day.

I pull it out and look at the tiny pine branch drawn in the corner.

People think infidelity is about the moment you get caught. They think it is about the shouting, the tears, or the dramatic confrontation in the hallway. But it isn't. Infidelity is about the devastating, permanent silence that follows. It is the realization that you traded a fortress of loyalty for a fleeting, worthless thrill.

I trace the pine branch with my thumb, standing in the rain outside the bodega. Rebecca had walked into my office carrying my entire future in her hands, ready to give me the world. And I had looked her right in the eyes, kissed another woman, and threw it all away.
