Chapter 9 - The Digital Guillotine

I stared at the phone in sheer, unadulterated panic. My malware hadn't just failed; it had been completely consumed.

Sterling grabbed my arm, his fingers digging into my bicep like a vice. “What the hell just happened, David? You said the fault line reports were locked in their servers!”

Before I could answer, the heavy wooden doors at the back of the courtroom violently burst open. Six armed federal agents wearing dark suits and tactical vests flooded the aisle, their eyes scanning the crowd with terrifying intensity.

At the front of the room, Rebecca stood up. She didn't look surprised. She didn't look relieved. She slowly turned around, her gaze cutting through the crowd of billionaires and developers, until her eyes locked directly onto mine.

She held up a sleek, encrypted tablet.

“Magistrate,” Rebecca’s voice echoed through the massive, vaulted room, ringing with lethal, uncompromising authority. “I am submitting a formal criminal complaint to the federal authorities present in this room. Yesterday afternoon, my internal cybersecurity team detected a massive, unauthorized intrusion into the county’s environmental protection mainframe.”

The entire room gasped, the developers murmuring in shock. Sterling physically took a step away from me, the color completely draining from his face.

“The intruder,” Rebecca continued, her eyes pinning me to the wall, “attempted to forge federal geological reports to artificially crash the valuation of the Silver Creek Valley. It was a textbook case of corporate espionage and wire fraud. However, they were unaware that I upgraded the county’s digital architecture three months ago as part of a philanthropic infrastructure grant. We didn't block the intrusion. We quarantined it in a digital honeypot, allowing us to trace the IP address directly back to the physical device that executed the code.”

My phone vibrated violently in my hand. It was burning hot. The screen shifted from the locked error message to a live, flashing GPS coordinate map. It was broadcasting my exact location in the room directly to the federal agents.

“You idiot,” Sterling hissed, turning his back on me and attempting to walk quickly toward the side exit.

“Mr. Sterling, do not move,” the lead federal agent barked, drawing his weapon as two agents intercepted the Vanguard CEO. “We have the encrypted communications between your firm and the proxy device. You are both under arrest.”
