Chapter 3 - The Hostile Takeover

The reception desk was empty. The trading floor was completely dark. The servers had been physically ripped from the walls, leaving only dangling ethernet cables.
"What the hell..." I breathed, stumbling down the corridor toward my corner office.
The heavy frosted glass door to my suite was wide open.
Inside, my custom mahogany desk had been cleared of everything except a single crystal whiskey glass. Sitting in my $4,000 ergonomic chair, bathed in the cold morning light of the floor-to-ceiling windows, was a man I recognized instantly.
Elias Thorne.
Elias was the apex predator of the East Coast financial underworld. He was a ruthless, untouchable billionaire who swallowed rival corporations whole and decimated the lives of anyone who crossed him. My firm had spent the last two years desperately trying—and failing—to secure a meeting with his syndicate.
Elias wore a flawless, bespoke charcoal suit. He didn't look up when I entered. He simply took a slow sip of his whiskey, his dark, calculating eyes radiating a lethal authority that made the air in the room feel suffocatingly heavy.
Four heavily armed men in black tactical suits stepped silently out of the shadows, blocking the doorway behind me.
"Mr... Mr. Thorne?" I stammered, all the bravado draining from my body. "What are you doing in my office? Where is my company?"
"You don't have a company anymore, Daniel," Elias murmured, his voice a deep, vibrating rumble that sent a spike of pure terror straight into my spine. "As of 3:00 AM, Whitman Capital was dissolved, its assets liquidated, and its client list absorbed by Thorne Global."
"You can't do that!" I yelled, stepping forward, only to freeze as the tactical guards rested their hands on their holstered weapons. "I'm the CEO!"

Elias slowly stood up. The sheer gravitational pull of his presence was overwhelming.
"You were the CEO," Elias corrected lethally. "Until your wife utilized the power of attorney you blindly signed to sell me your controlling shares for exactly one dollar."
