Chapter 4 - The Checkmate

I physically stumbled backward. "Hannah... Hannah sold you my company? How does she even know you?!"
Elias’s jaw locked. The cold indifference in his eyes vanished, replaced by a dark, demonic fury that promised absolute destruction.
"Her name isn't Hannah," Elias whispered, closing the distance between us in two massive strides, towering over me. "It's Elena Thorne. She is my younger sister."
My blood turned to ice.
"Five years ago," Elias continued, his voice dropping to a terrifying register, "she asked me to let her live a civilian life. She wanted a quiet home, a faithful husband, and a family away from the violence of my world. I let her go, on the strict condition that she remained entirely off the grid. And I swore to her that if the man she chose ever caused her a single tear, I would burn his entire life to the ground."
"No," I choked out, tears of absolute panic welling in my eyes. "Please. It was a mistake. I love her. I love Noah!"
"You loved the illusion of your own superiority," Elias sneered, grabbing me by the lapels of my suit and slamming me brutally against the glass wall of the office.
I gasped for air, staring into the eyes of the monster my wife had summoned to end me.
"The house is mine. The accounts are drained. The shadow ledgers documenting your massive tax fraud have been mailed to the IRS," Elias decreed, his grip tightening like a vise. "Elena and my nephew are on a private jet to an estate you will never find, guarded by men who would shoot you on sight."

He let go of me, and I collapsed to the carpet, gasping and weeping as the sheer magnitude of my ruin crushed me. The mistress, the ego, the double life—it had all been a pathetic joke. Hannah hadn't just been packing her bags. She had been meticulously placing the explosive charges under the foundation of my life.
"You have the clothes on your back, Daniel," the most powerful man on the East Coast whispered, looking down at me with ultimate disgust. "If you ever try to contact my sister or my nephew again, I will ensure you don't survive to see the sunrise. Now get out of my building."
