Chapter 1 - The House of Cards

The drive to my attorney’s office felt like a death march. My hands gripped the steering wheel of my Mercedes so tightly my knuckles turned entirely white. I had spent the last six months thinking I was the smartest man in the room—a successful venture capitalist balancing a beautiful wife, a newborn son, and a passionate, secret life with Vanessa.
I was a fool.
When I walked into Robert’s corner office, he didn't offer me a drink. He didn't even stand up. He just sat behind his massive mahogany desk, staring at a thick, black leather binder.
“Sit down, David,” Robert said, his voice entirely devoid of its usual warmth.
“Robert, tell me you filed the emergency custody order,” I demanded, pacing the length of his office. “Claire can’t just disappear with my son. I have rights.”
“You don’t have any rights right now,” Robert snapped, slamming his hand flat against the binder. “Sit down and look at what your wife had couriered to my office two hours ago.”
I sank into the leather chair opposite him, a cold sweat breaking out on the back of my neck. I opened the binder. The first page was a high-resolution photograph of Vanessa and me walking into the Grand Meridian hotel. The second page was a copy of my secret credit card statement.
“So she hired a private investigator,” I scoffed, trying to mask my rising panic. “It’s adultery, Robert. It’s a no-fault state. She can’t use this to keep Noah away from me.”
“Keep turning the pages, David.”
I flipped to the third section, and the air completely left my lungs.
It wasn’t just credit card statements. It was a complete, unredacted forensic audit of my venture capital firm’s primary escrow accounts. There were highlighted wire transfers, routed through three different shell LLCs, ultimately landing in an offshore account in the Caymans.
“Claire didn't just find out you were sleeping with a twenty-four-year-old,” Robert said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “She found out that you’ve been embezzling investor capital to fund your lavish lifestyle. You used corporate funds to pay for Vanessa’s luxury lease. You used client money to buy that diamond necklace you gave your mistress last month.”
My heart hammered so violently in my chest I thought it might crack my ribs. I had been careful. I had hidden those transfers beneath layers of corporate acquisitions.
“How did she get this?” I choked out.
“Claire has a master’s degree in finance, David. You hired her as your lead analyst before you married her. Did you really think she lost her brain cells just because she gave birth?” Robert shook his head, looking at me with pure disgust. “She didn't just leave you. She handed me the evidence of three federal felonies. And she left a note for me, too.”

Robert slid a small, white piece of paper across the desk.
Tell David that if he ever tries to fight me for custody, this binder goes straight to the SEC and the FBI. He can either be a ghost, or he can be an inmate. His choice.
